TV licensing rant

Well it could be worse.

We could have adverts every 5 minutes like in the good old US of A :p

Ahhh....that's what we have PVR's for. Record and skip the ads.

TV licence is up for review again in 2016 so they may scrap it. In the meantime, TV licence will have doubled compared to what we are paying now and the BBC will have cut 50% of the services they are currently providing. Paying more for less in the future.....fun times ahead:(

It's less than 3 quid a week and you get to see Susannah Reid legally every Friday morning before you go to work!

Erm how will the TV licence have doubled?
It's effectively been cut by 20%+ over the next few years as it's been frozen, and the BBC are now being forced to pay for services that used to be funded directly by the government (things that have little or no benefit to the licence payer - the World service for example, and some of it's media monitoring services).

It's worth noting that in real terms the TVL hasn't increased by more than a few percent above inflation in decades, and I believe much of the increase was when Colour TV became the norm (the last big real increase was to pay for the switch-over scheme, an increase that whilst paid through the TVL, was not something the BBC had access to for programming as it was ring fenced*).
Apart from that, from memory a comparison of the TVL compared to inflation showed it had only risen by about a fiver (todays money), in about 30+ years, if only the same was true for Sky/VM.

I doubt the government will scrap it, as at that would be extremely unpopular with the bulk of the population, as despite the likes of the DM's faked outrage at the salaries paid by the BBC**, the BBC is generally liked, just that people don't like to pay the TVL (who likes to pay any bill?).
Unfortunately the cuts that the government has imposed likely mean that the BBC is going to lose some of it's quality, and variety of programming.

*And which the BBC objected to the Government trying to make a grab for it, when it became apparent that there was going to be an excess after the switchover - the BBC argued for it to be refunded as it hadn't been needed for the purposed it had been taken for.

*The highest paid BBC exec is on a fraction of the salary of of the DM editor, indeed I beleive the entire wage bill of the top BBC staff doesn't come to much more than the salaries of the DM's 2 or 3 top people (and Sky and ITV both pay even more than that - it says something when many BBC senior staff seem to be able to leave the BBC, and walk into a higher paid job with ease).

There are so many bits wrong with your post Old Wine it's amusing :)
I hope you were joking.
For example those old costumes often cost a small fortune to keep usable, as often they are custom made and very expensive to make in the first place, then have to be inspected, often thoroughly cleaned and repaired after use, before storage :) (IIRC the people that make them are often pretty highly skilled as to be authentic they need to use a lot of traditional materials and methods).

Any BBC show sold abroad is marketed by BBC Worldwide, the BBC's commercial arm. They control and licence BBC shows to other countires as well as running the sales arm for DVD's, books etc. as well as the Lice shows Walking with Dinosaurs and Strictly Come dancing etc.

In the year to 31 March 2010 it made a profit of £145m on a turnover of £1.074bn. That's a tiny, tiny percentage and without them it's likely the Licence fee would be higher again!

Personally I think the BBC is a good thing. no ads means programs that wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being made for a commercial station regularly appear on the BBC and I really want to write to them to tell them not to drop F1!

There may be some out there who honestly never do use their TV for watching any TV signals, but I'm sure everybody switches it on every now and again. What if you had people over for example?

stick a dvd on or make conversation? i doubt people come around to your house to watch tv

How to deal with TV License Inspectors :-

If they come round, don't give them any information. Tell them you've removed there 'assumed right of access' to your property and if they don't leave or come round again you'll call the police =and have them prosecuted for trespassing.

I'm not sure what you expect the Police to do. Trespass is a civil matter.

I knew you would come back with that comment.

What about when you may be watching sport with friends... World Cup Football for example, or Formula 1 (which you've said you watch).

If you are watching it, you are watching TV end of. You should therefore be paying the license fee.

Just done a quick google on this, and as far as I can tell, hes right. Unless you get a court order for them to leave, the police can't touch them, and its not legal for you to forcibly remove them.

What a ****ing farce...

Of course Burnsy is right, he's a police officer.

Mind you, plenty of us could have pointed out that trespass is a civil offence.

It was more the fact that legally speaking anyone could pitch a tent on my front lawn and neither I nor the police could do a damn thing about it until I managed to get a court order.

Sounds like my mother. Completely ignorant on most subjects but will still give a strong opinion on just about anything as if it were fact.

Mothers, don;t you love them?

I once convinced my mother that she should put back the packet of lard she had picked up and get the "low fat" lard as it's much healthier for you. She even went to ask one of the shelf stackers where she could find the "low fat" lard :D

I think it'll only be a matter of time before I get a visit from one of these 'investigators' to my unoccupied property. I keep on getting threatening letters despite telling them it's unoccupied and completely empty (doesn't even have a bathroom or kitchen!) and the last letter I got said something like my file had been passed on to the investigators who would be visiting my property at some stage.
