I'm getting a little down at the moment because all of my favorite shows are finishing or finished for the summer...24, Prison Break, My Name Is Earl, Apprentice UK, Lost, Sopranos...so I figure it's time to get into some stuff over the summer that I really haven't given a chance before.

On another thread deSade recommended Deadwood, so gonna try that, but looking for recommendations, my loves and hates are as follows:

LOVE: 24, Prison Break, Lost, My Name Is Earl, Sopranos, Rome, Battlestar Galactica, Apprentice UK, Sopranos, Babylon 5, Shameless, ER, Nip/Tuck

ON THE FENCE: Hex, Family Guy, SG1

HATE: Smallville, OC, Reality TV (except Apprentice UK), Alias, Trek, Buffy, DR Who, The Unit, Invasion, Threshold

Hopefully that's enough to give you an idea of my tastes, there is very little UK tv that I like, mainly into the US stuff, willing to give just about anything a go that's been made within the last decade or so...so spam me with your suggestions, cheers!

Here's the list of what i've been convinced to checkout so far...

Deadwood, Sleeper Cell, The Grid, Greys Anatomy,

Watch both series of "I am Alan Partridge" and "Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge"

Also "Arrested Development" is brilliant especially the second series

Check out the Dads Army repeats that crop up on UKtvGold. They always have me in fits

Very little on UK TV I like as well, the US stuff is even worse IMHO, but fair play to you if you like it.

Failing that, buy or rent a good movie, much more satisfying than TV episodes IMHO?

LOL, maybe I'm getting old and jaded, but I cant even be bothered with the latest Dr Who on TV these days, even though Billy Piper has a nice bum :)

You could try Firefly (though if you didn't like Buffy, you might not be a fan of the type of humour in it).

Er... CSI is always good, and plenty of series to go at.

And failing that, there's the good old Band of Brothers to fall back on. Never get tired of rewatching it.

Sleeper Cell on FX - if you like 24 you should love it, as it's far better storyline/acting and violence wise ;)

I really liked "Dead Like Me", was great, 2 seasons worth, but got cancelled.

FireFly, you may be hit and miss about, but watch the first 2 episodes and you should have a good idea of what it's like, then once you've watched it all, watch the film Serenity.

Echoing xyphic, Band of Brothers, by far, in my opinion of course, the best TV action/drama series in a long long time, it's just Saving Private Ryan, but 10 hours worth, and some very moving stories all the way through.

Green Wing series one and two.
Unbeleivably funny totally surreal and brilliant.

First of all, thanks for all the replies, you've reminded me of a few series I really want to watch again and a few I wasn't really aware of!

I remember watching AP first time around and quite enjoyed it, don't think it's one i'd go back to though. I've just checked out the summary for AD and it really doesn't seem to be my thing unfortunately :(

I remember watching and loving these as a kid, but on watching a few of them last year sometime, I just couldn't get that same kind of feeling back!

I watch hell of a lot of movies, always have something available to watch, that's also part of the problem, i've literally seen most of the good movies around...plus my girlfriend is on a film course at uni and this means I end up watching a fair few good foreign movies i'd never have given a chance before

I checked out the first couple of episodes of the new series with Chris Eccleston and really enjoyed his take on the Doctor Who character, but poor SFX/CGI and shoddy writing really meant I was cringing most of the way through.

I saw the movie Serenity, which was quite good on a very cheesy light hearted level. Isn't it supposed to be a conclusion to the series?

I liked the original, then it seemed to get lazy with the writing and the endless spinoffs didn't seem to have enough passion put into them.

Absolutely excellent TV, i've watched it through twice now and really think i'll give it another re-watch...for me it's the remedy to the dreadful Saving Private Ryan.

Oooo...I remember seeing a trailer for this a few weeks ago and really liked the look of it, but couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called, i'll check out the pilot and give it a go, thanks :D

If you like Ray Winstone then the series 'Vincent' was very good

He's an incredible actor...whats Vincent about?

I caught a few episodes on Sky One a few years back and found it a little too cringeworthy :(

Blackadder, Red Dwarf maybe.

Loved these first time around...aside from the last series or two of RD, really seemed as though they lost the plot

I'll throw in "Spaced" too, can't get enough of it personally, but not everybody likes it.

awesome show, got both series on dvd a while back and watched them non stop repeatedly for a few weeks, such great storylines

I watched Serenity prior to Firefly, and to be honest, I don't think it really matters in which order you watch them. The series follows pretty much the same formula as the film, you just get a lot more of it (and it gives the characters much more depth). If you liked the film I don't think you'll be disappointed by the series... just wish the powers that be would bring it back.

scrubs, grey's anatomy, house, hustle, hotel babylon, csi, red dwarf & malcolm in the middle all good for wasting time

House is a must if you like ER and Prison Break and the like, with added Hugh Laurie :D

The 4400 - Invasion is like the runt sibling of this top-notch drama about people who were abducted, given special powers, then dumped en masse back on earth

I will second Arrested Development, it may not sound that great from the synopsis, but it is absoloutely fantastic (one of my favourite all time shows) - if you have seen Curb Your Enthusiasm (which I also recommend), it is like a scripted and slightly less cringeworthy version

The Grid - a one off mini series from the BBC/Fox, similar in plot style to cross between 24 and Spooks (which again I recommend you see), centring on counter terrorism forces of the UK/USA working together to diffuse a terrorist plot.
