So I been looking around for a new TV, I dont need 3D or 4K or coffee making facilities.

Just a TV.

So with a £500 budget (but £400 would be nice) what is worth a closer look.

Samsung UE40JU6400

Its a lovely looking 40" TV with Va panel, so excellent colours, deep blacks and good viewing angles, the PQ is quite high on this one, the 200-300 panels you won't get that same detail or quality imo. When in doubt check it in currys or john lewis I did :)

If you can stretch it richer sounds do it for 550 with 6 year warranty and JL can price match it but with a 5 year warranty but better customer service.

40" just to small for a living room more of a bedroom or dining area we have 40" in our bedroom would never spend that type of money for a bedroom tv. Well not at the moment LOL

We have the Samsung H6400 40" In our bedroom and the 48" in our living room i know you don't want or need 3D but for the money that 40" is a great tv. And we don't use the 3D either even though it does look quite good when we have

Samsung UE40HU6900 40 In Ultra HD Freeview HD Smart LED TV. is in argos ... its last years model and is discontinued ... £449 if you can find it

I tried to get dad to buy this telly when we saw instore 2 months ago. He went for the 4K model instead :rolleyes:

I don't think you'll get better for the money, the price has dropped by £50 since I saw it. At that price I'd buy one, as its £40 less than I paid for my Panny 32" 3 years ago.
I think that particular model is £349 at richer sounds and get a 6 year warranty as well
I was looking at that one, but unsure whether to get that or a samsung

Loads of choice at this price range and you should be easily be able to get a decent 1080p screen closer to the £400 mark or even cheaper, for example;

Panasonic VIERA TX-40AS640B: last years model, specific for Currys/PC World for less than £300 at the official Panasonic Outlet eBay store. VA panel, highly recommended on HDTV test, ?direct LED lit similar to the Samsung UE40H6400, active 3D. Not the best in terms on input lag so if you're plan on using it for console game then get a Sony Bravia instead.

Other options;

Samsung UE40H6400 £399 @ John Lewis Link. Faster quad core for in menu and SMART stuff etc.

Panasonic TX-40CS520B £349 @ Richer Sounds Link. 2015 range, no 3D, edge-backlit I believe and only two HDMI inputs.

Sony KDL42W705B Very good for TV for gaming if you can get hold of one for <£400.

is the input lag on tv's especially the ones mentioned above that noticeable using game consoles?

i have now gone from PC gaming to a PS4, and was on the look out for a new tv as per Stulids requirements but my budget is £400

I can only comment on the Samsung UE40H6400 and not the Panasonics (although I'm tempted to order the TX-40AS640B for the bedroom). Lag wasn't that bad to be honest and unless you're very picky or particular I'd hazard a guess it would certainly be ok to live with. The problem is everyones perceptions of lag vary so what may be acceptable to me won't be for you. Having said that I've used a PS3 and XBox 360 on an older Sony and a cheap Samsung and found them both fine to game casually on.

Also if you watch fast paced action movies or sport at all I would go with a Sony Bravia. They just seem to handle motion much better especially at the budget end of the range when compared to others.

Very happy H6400 owner, amazing blacks if you stick a light source behind the screen too.

What is this light source?

Am curious have heard it few times it is modding the TV with some gizmo to increase better contrast/blacks or something?

I am considering the JU6400 but that looked to have amazing blacks, whites already.

Yep, I used to have remote controlled LEDs around my plasma.

Now I just have a touch-lamp behind my tv, it's a nifty little optical illusion :D
