Twitter : Being Offensive

Niether of those examples are comparable to what happened though.

I can not defend the words or the message the guy used, but I'll defend his right to say it without being arrested.

What ever happened to blocking people on Twitter, that's all Tom had to do.

If you’re driving towards freedom of speech, I wouldn’t bother, it has nothing to do with this, despite what some think, freedom of speech doesn't mean you can simply rant about whatever’s on your mind to whoever you want, public opinion drives what's acceptable.

People in the spotlight draw more media attention, particularly in a situation when someone threatens to drown someone in the Olympic Games, the police can't monitor nor deal with every single offence, but they will pick up on ones in the media spotlight, deal with it.

This has all been covered in the other thread anyway.

I'm not driving towards that argument, I'm driving towards a sensible and moreover consistent approach to the laws governing speech.

OK maybe I've only heard half the story then because I was under the impression this guy was arrested for telling Tom Daley his dead father wouldn't be proud of his efforts in London?

That's going to be impossible to achieve, social media is too large, so the police have two options:

1) Let anyone say anything.

2) Pick up on the high profile cases and hope the effect washes down and helps reduce the more widespread abuse.

Only if you say it to someone famous and it gets on the news, then the police care otherwise they'd treat it no differently to one person complaining another called them a bad name, i.e. laugh the complainer out of the station.

I guarantee that if you told a random, non-famous person on Twitter that his dead father wouldn't be proud of them absolutely nothing would happen.

But we can't have people picking on the people's prince Tom Daley can we?

from what i read, when they looked at his twitter there was loads of racist stuff on there. maybe thats it.

Having read the kids twitter when he went off the deep end, what he said to Daley was only part of why he was arrested. He was arrested for the threats to kill he made to Daley, other users and the racist vitriol he was spouting. I watched in real time as he called people **** *******s that he was going to stab, then say "I'm sorry" before immediately turning round and spouting more racism and threats.

The kid was being an absolute tool and I'm glad the police got involved.

Edit: And there was also his video were he was acting the swinging dick.

No.

He was arrested for the death threat he sent him.

This.

It really does annoy me though that people think others should be arrested for offending somebody. Even the racist tram lady, sorry scrote, I don't think should even have been arrested (I know why she was, the public order act and what not). It only disrupts the peace if others let it, if people don't care what she's saying and ignore her nothing will come of it and she'll just end up looking like a pillock.

In that case the police were right to act as they did. I wish the media would report the whole thing though as I saw two news stories on this and both implied he was arrested for the 'dead dad not being proud' line.

The guy said (to Tom) that he had "let his Dad down" - note: Tom's Dad recently passed away.

I don't give a toss for that guy's civil rights. He deserves the slap on the wrist just for being such a ****.

There's being controversial, and then there is being outright offensive. The tram lady was the latter. Someone standing on a street corner yelling profanities is the latter.

There are civilised ways to approach topics of controversy - shouting them at people and using insults is not one of them.

It's ********, all this cyber bullying and being offended over things on the internet.
Do these idiots not know how to close a web browser?

Fair enough it was a bit harsh (coming from a man who thinks Tom Daley is a massive ******) but getting the police involved, really? The internet is full of bigots and racist morons.

Let idiots be idiots, I've been called all manner of names in my life. It really makes no odds to me, people trying to be offensive just get really annoyed when you ignore them.

It's easy to troll on the net. Less so in the street. You pull a stunt like this, you may end up having to collect your teeth off the floor. If someone's being a proper dick in public, he's either looking for a fight, or waiting to get beat. In either case, he's a liability.

Personally, I'm not a fan of that sort of sensorship. It's twitter, just kick out the idiot. That's what moderators are for.

Death threats are different. If you feel you are being genuinly threaten, then by all mean, bring the fuzz.
