Type 45 Daring class destroyer

She open to the public? Would love a look round.

I don't think so no.

The numbers game is tricky as these are expensive toys but we haven't had two carriers at sea at the same time for any significant period in a very long time and I can't see that changing!

As far as I understand one of the new carriers will always be out whilst the other is berthed back at Portsmouth. I don't know what the plans are for the old carriers though, do you? Regards the Merlin, it aint a bad piece of kit, despite the doors always fell off :)

The Daring is a beast by the way, I'll post pics later. The real model they mocked up on the hill looks funny on the skyline, they used that to test the antennas and radars I believe. Apparently when the Daring comes into dock they have to shut all the radars off because they're so strong they make the locals tv sets bork out.

HA!, Browns been announcing the building of these carriers for year now ill be surprised if the steel get cut during his time in office, if it wasn’t for the fact that final assembly was getting done in his constituency he would have cancelled them a long time ago.

I expect it will, milliatry contracts are a excellent source of work and will help the economy.

Alongside. Note Merlin on the flight deck.

Berthed with River Class OPV in background (we actually just rent those things)

Apologies for the poor quality, was behind glass at this point. The test facility on the hill :)

We really need to get these into service the type 43s have almost no capability left half the stuff on them either does not work or is turned off. I believe we can't even get the sea darts anymore because we would have to order a silly amount to get them manufactured. Also the one that ran aground and had to be refurnbished at great expense is still pretty broken.

Hmm I wish I could nip down the road and have a nose round lol

What is a 43? And, sources?

HMS Grafton? That isn't even ours anymore!

Unless you mean the 42, HMS Nottingham which isn't pretty broken at all, it's in the reserve fleet.

Unless you mean the 45 HMS Nottingham:
On 7 July 2003, the anniversary of the collision, Nottingham was refloated. In April 2004 she sailed again following the £39m repair and refit. The ship returned to duty in July 2004.

Despite the £39M spent on her in 2004, in April 2008, she was placed in a state of "Extended Readiness" at Portsmouth.

Doh I'm a dick I mean type 42 destroyers, because we have no shells for some long range gun(?) they don't bother running the big radars or something.

Lol my old man he can't half go on, he served on HMS Gloucester some time ago and now works as a cival servant doing gunnery analysis, hes always moaning about the state of the navy and how he is glad to be out of it.

Nottingham is the one thats screwed, there is a part of one of the big guns or something that they have replaced like four times already and they also think there is still a lot of hull damage.

Please excuse the lack of technical-ness I'm not a navy person myself.

Well, we'll agree on that.

But not on that, she was sailing for 4yrs after her damage was repaired... so I can't see how she'd be that ****** to be honest.

But then again, this is a Labour government... the hole could just be filled with paper mache and painted. :D

The only thing I can remember from what he was saying was defo something something wrong with something on one of the guns and instead of them getting to the bottom of it they just keep changing a part thats now been changed multiple times, I think he said they suspect the ship is twisted in some way so don't think it effects the sailing of her but is causing problems which keep needing to be fixed (prolly completely wrong on that though).

I do remember going for a spin and some lunch on Gloucester when I was a nipper, it was pretty awesome at the time.
