Anybody else noticed the huge increase in people either
a) not spelling properly (I don't mean slight mistakes here and there, but just generally HUGE errors, or not even attempting to spell words correctly)
or
b) using text speak - again on the forums?

I thought we had filters (etc) to stop most of the "childish" language?

A heck of a lot of new users seems to be posting "thx u r cool", "wot wud u do?" :-/

Is it just me or do others find it annoying? Most of the time it takes me longer to read/understand what people type in text speak than if they write it out correctly...

Sorry rant over :o

So you've only just noticed then? It's been a problem for at least a year, more likely two.

Most of it is just pure laziness, or because people think it's cool (when it's really just annoying and silly). Still, at least it's not l33t sp34k. :D

I would actually agree that it's starting to get worse again after levelling off a bit since certain letter combos got starred out.

It's a shame but there's only so much that can be done about it... banning people for "txt ***" on sight would be a little harsh even by my standards ;)

I just down see the point in all this text speak. It's not like i'm too old for it i'm only 20. I generally don't want to come off as a retarded hobo who lives in a shed hence I don't use text speak.

I've not noticed but then i am probably guilty of lots of grammar and spelling errors.
I would hope that people appreciate that there are different levels of educated people using the forums and some who have had virtually no education at all.
I try my best to get my point over correctly and hope that at least this is noticed.
Threads like these certainly make me feel paranoid about such things though which can't be right.

I do agree though that the so called l33t speak should be filtered though its BS and childish and should only be used in the form of a joke to take the mick out of it.

I also feel that odvious typo's should not be pulled by the grammar natzi's its bad form in my opinion. I mean come on we all make typo's and we knew what he meant so why try to humiliate a chap. Poor form i say.

haha... well... okay maybe not only JUST noticed but it does seem to have gotten a lot worse lately (most people that joined after Dec 2005 seem to be doing it).

one user not so long ago managed to attract my attention by somehow, managing to not use any punctuation at all in his posts.

no full stops, commas... nothing.

something i spotted in the CPU forum (whilst searching for the SuperPI thread) was this:

kk, well i will elave it running prime95 over nifght tonite.
i understand that not everyone in the world can touchtype, so they have to look at the keyboard whilst typing and may miss the odd typo here and there... but you will look at the screen to hit that submit button, surely you'd notice that?

I should point out I wasn't getting at any particular user, or those who make the odd few genuine mistakes (I'm more than guilty of that).

The problem is people who blatently post without any effort or thought whatsoever about those who then have to spent 10 minutes figuring out what on earth the poster is saying.

I have no problem with people who genuinely have difficulty due to dyslexia, disability, or whatever else. I'm well aware that some people have to make more effort than others (I'm one of them).

If you make the effort, then you have no reason to be upset (and thanks for making the effort). If you don't make the effort, then maybe you should be joining those that do.

i definately realise that there is a huge variaty of people that use these forums, ages ranging from 13 - 50/60+ probably... as i said, everyone makes mistakes in spelling/grammar... i'm not saying that after every post we make we should copy&paste it into word and do a spell check, just saying that surely you'd notice blatant spelling mistakes when they happen.

text speak falls under a different category IMO, it doesn't have anything to do with how educated or intelligent you are... its personal choice and just (at least in my opinion anyway) makes you look small and childish.

if you were new to a forum and you posted about a new CPU your interested in (say an FX60 or something) - who would you take more seriously, the guy that says:

"it isa *** cpu, wrks well... got anu nlocked mltiplyer 4 overclocking bt is v spense..."

or the guy that said

"its a good processor, it works well and has an unlocked multiplier to help with overclocking, but is very expensive"

The worst for this are people asking short questions in the hardware sections, where they do not add enough information, just a post like.

Thread Title: PC007 case
Thread contents: N E GD?

Thoose are the only sort of posts that ever get to me, or the ones which have no attempt at all to spell or type with punctuation, I try and mess up a lot, but at least I try.

sorry if what i've said has come across as harsh to a few people, but those two quotes pretty much sum up what i wanted to get across.

It has not to me, its a valid point worthy of discussion.

If it is not already, maybe a advisory on posting in full sentances to the best of your ability should be added to the FAQ.
