Anybody else noticed the huge increase in people either
a) not spelling properly (I don't mean slight mistakes here and there, but just generally HUGE errors, or not even attempting to spell words correctly)
or
b) using text speak - again on the forums?

I thought we had filters (etc) to stop most of the "childish" language?

A heck of a lot of new users seems to be posting "thx u r cool", "*** *** u do?" :-/

Is it just me or do others find it annoying? Most of the time it takes me longer to read/understand what people type in text speak than if they write it out correctly...

Sorry rant over :o

I have to say, I'm surprised that we haven't seen more of these:

I think we should use this as the official picture to post in such occasions

The only place I ever use Text Speak is if I'm writing a Text Message funnily enough....and usually I only use it then if I need to trim out a few characters to fit in what I want to say.

I'd rather send a second SMS than resort to Text Speak.

Personally, if a post is unreadable due to grammar and spelling errors, I skip it.

And if it happens too many times with the same poster, I don't bother reading ANY of thier posts or opening any of thier threads.

There's enough info/stuff posted here to keep me happy for hours on end without having to try and decipher someone's poor and lazy attempt at communication.

So here's a note to self for some of you folks : If I've never responded to any of your posts/threads even when you've directly asked me a question, try running your post/thread through Word. If it comes up with more than a 25% error rate, that's probably why.......

Or at least try proofreading your post before hitting the Submit button. I just did it to mine and found two typo errors. Only took me about 15 seconds to do, too.

I dont mind if people make some spelling mistakes, its not the end of the world and i think its really silly for people to get bothered by silly little spelling mistakes when you can still make out what they are trying to say.

But text speak is something that isnt neccesary, makes it harder for other people to understand what you are on about. Why not use English when typing? I understand when its text talk on a text message but not when its on a forum.

I think we should summon up a plague of fleas (or should that be flea's ;)) for anyone who uses "brought" instead of "bought".

That really gets me going.... it's not a typo, it's totally the wrong word!

It's 'their' :p

Classic.
Those that have moaned the most are just as guilty as the rest of us for poor pronounciation and spelling typo's.
What Snobs you are.

I am in Total agreement with Tinkerbell.

I have to say I read various forums and it annoys the hell out of me. I sit back and think is this person retarded, dyslexic, taking the mickey or thinks its normal.

Maybe its the old fart in me but I wonder if 'the youth' think its good and normal. I'm sure if I sent an email or fax to a customer and signed KTHXBY etc it would go down very well.

PS

I'm not on about the odd typo or gramatical error.

Yes its a shame the thread titles isnt Dont use Crap l33t speak.

I totally agree with all sentiments that are anti crap speak.
I also agree with the No effort posts being ignored.
Its just the nit picking i find annoying with someone who has odviously put effort into his post. Pulling a dude for typo's or minor spelling grammar mistakes i feel is bad form.

How about a dedicated Paypal fund for installing Spellchecker as an option on the WYSIWYG and Standard posting mode?

And Insta-Castration™ for all punctutation (the OP's is appalling, by the way), spelling, grammatical and idiomatic errors.

How old are you people? Surely typing in a form of shorthand is quicker and when as widely accepted as net speak is as easy to understand as the queens english.

ps. i tried my best not to shorten any words in this post, but it has been so long since i attempted to do this. I currently have word at work with auto complete set to turn any net speak back into english :)

It's a new thing coming up from the youngers kids. I met a girl last year on a working holiday on a tallship - she's perfectly intelligent, quite shy, speaks with no accent or dropped letters etc etc. However, on MSN she was a complete txt-spker, it was almost painful to read and often quite difficult! Argh!

Point proven I guess. It's in the last couple of years, kids coming up from school lately have grown up (moreso than people like me who first got a PC at 14 and a mobile at 15) with MSN and texting. It's not easy to read dude, unless you're used to it.

*Beats Cueball with a stick*

Out of all my contacts on MSN, only one or two are actually annoying enough to not type correctly and I just ignore them when they do talk to me.
The thing is, the majority of the time, it's not even making it easier, it's like some people actually think their illiteracy makes them cool.

Someone's MSN Name said:
dats *** u tld me n i believ it cos i aint eva ad nebody do me lyk u

It actually took me longer to think about that then it did to type this sentance. It does not save time.

What's so hard in just typing the whole words? It takes a fraction longer, and in my case it's much faster anyway.
I usually have to read text speak over about three times before I understand what is trying to be said. It's amazing how useful commas are.

I used to use "text speak" a lot during my Q2 days because it was easier to smack out some random letters that had some vague meaning than to spend 20 minutes explaining to someone what an arse they've been by stealing the rocket launcher from you because you had "first dibs" on it due to camping the RL spawn for the past 10 minutes.

I guess that sub conscious "must go as fast as possible" typing culture spilt over onto forums. Eventually I learnt to touch type and so typing out a proper sentence was just as fast as using "text speak".

I can see why people would use "omfg txt ***!!!" in games, but to use it on a forum is rude and annoying--you can nay understand what they're saying!

I used to type without using caps at all. It felt quicker than having to punch the shift key every time. I then realised that my posts were non-readable, so I stopped.

I am really guilty of using acronyms though. I have so many acronyms that I need acronyms to remember other acronyms.

What is funny, is a thread like this where by people complain about bad spelling/grammar/punctuation/unecessary abreviation and if you look, you can see it in their own posts!

:)
