Typing faster

I want to start typing faster. It's pretty simple, but meh.
I'm left handed (not sure if that has any relevance whatsoever) and I feel that I personally do not type as fast as I could be able to, or as fast as I used to be able to.
I have some flaws, such as the fact that I use my right hand index finger to press the space bar 95% of the time, therefore my thumbs are used for nothing.
Also, when I even attempt to type fast, I make a lot of errors in some words.
Since I use the right index finger I obviously find the typical position of where the fingers should be laid uncomfortable.
Any tips? I'm getting a mechanical keyboard soon so that should hopefully improve the typing speed.
Thanks.

Change from Qwerty to Dvorak or Colemak for a start. That'll improve your typing speed more than switching to a mechanical keyboard.

Play this: Z-Type

Also before you start trying to learn to type fast, make sure you are typing correctly, for years due to PC gaming is was typing perfectly on my left hand but only using one finger on my right hand. Took me months and qite a lot of will power to sort out that little quirk.

That is the worst advice you could give anyone ever. Yes they are good key layouts but when 99.9% of the world uses QWERTY you end up working yourself into a corner.

No but for someone who just wants to learn to type a bit faster what is the benefit of making them learn an entirely new layout?

They'll be able to type faster...

"I want to run faster"
"You need to change your stride to maximise your potential and efficiency"
"NO! I WANT MY STRIDE TO REMAIN THE SAME AND MAGIC TO HAPPEN!"

I couldn't imagine using a different layout.. That would be like wtf.. used a certain layout keyboard all of my life and now change :O NO WAY!

I type quickly anyway, how can a layout make THAT much difference though?

Ok how is that absurd analogy in any way similar to wanting to learn to type a little faster?

I got out of the slow style qwerty typing in college where we had to speed type stupid repeat sheets of random junk, you soon start using more of your hand and touch typing comes along with it.

It's just muscle memory.

They were designed to move more commonly used keys into more efficient positions and keep you more focused on the home row and reduce straining to reach keys. People forget that qwerty was intentionally designed to slow people down.

I played WoW which made me learn to type fast and touch type. I no longer play it but can still type quickly

How is it not? In both cases you want to increase your speed. In both cases you need to adjust your technique. Dvorak and Colemak were not designed for the sake of being different. They were designed specifically to increase typing speed.

Thanks, I played it just then, I shall play it whenever I have some spare time.
I also just noticed I don't use many of the fingers on my right hand either. It just seemed natural for me, and it's quite weird trying to use more since I'm left handed, and generally only play games where the left hand is required (WASD).
