I know nothing about tyres really, other than the car currently has ditch finders on the rear and some decent brand but crap tyres on the front.

I'm mostly after decent grip in the wet and dry, longevity would be a bonus, but in fairness I won't be using the car every day (just random weekends) so the main issue is grip. :)

Now I've been recommended lots of different tyres and I'm stumped as to what to get, so far I've been told to get...

Bridgestone Potenza RE 050 A
Goodyear EAGLE F1 GS-D3
Falken FK-452
Toyo PROXES T1-R

I need them in 225/50 R16 and looking at a max of about £100 a corner before fitting which I think is a fair budget really, but I don't want to skimp on tyres.

The F1s I understand will wear quickly, but grip well (at least on lighter cars they do), and the others I haven't heard much about really, just had them suggested.

:D

Another "what tyres thread" :(

It's nothing special just get some good range tyres, i'd recommend F1s from personal experience but i'm sure the others will be fine if not just as good.

I'd go for the Potenzas.

You recommended them. ;) :p

Out of interest, what makes you say them? As I recall you have PS2s or something on the 318iS. :)

EDIT: Also, the door pillar states the tyres should be 2.4bar front and 2.9bar rear, which is 42PSI on the rear and 34PSI on the front. Now I'm used to cars being around 30-34PSI front and 34PSI rear, do the pillar recommendations sound right?

The ultimate e36 tyre combination is:

Front: Falken FK452's

Rear: The cheapest pair of Chinese directionals you can find, mounted the wrong way.

Way more fun than grip - Guaranteed!
It will also hone your car control skills to a suitable level.

The directionals on the rear at the moment happily step out, I'd rather they didn't, not yet anyway. :p

Unfortunately you can't get PS2s in the size that your wheels are (I have them on my 318 and 330). Might be worth checking though. PS2s and Potenzas seem to wear well when pushed hard, T1Rs and Eagle F1s don't.

Have you thought about doing a track day in it?

Those pressures sound right to me. My 330 is 3.2 bar on the back. Double check the tyre sizes on the sticker though - the wheels on your car might not be the ones that is was wearing when it left the factory.

The sticker lists the 323 and the 328 and about 4 different wheel sizes. I found the 328i with 225/50 R16 and read that. I also did chuck the pressures up to what the sticker said when I checked them, as I wanted to ensure it was correct, which I guess it is. :)

It does appear that PS2s can't be had in my size certainly.

I do plan on doing some form of track day, and also ideally a carlimits day. For track days I'm thinking about doing Bedford when a few of you guys go in a few months time, the more run off the better, plus it isn't too far from Reading. :)

My old e38 munched through a set of 452's in about 8k compared to around 13k for the Potenzas, whilst the e38 is well known for tyre shredding, I thought the 452's were a bit poor.

They gripped wel enough mind you. :)

My e36 has 4 new tyres on it thanks to the dealer, alas, I think the brand is "Happy Shopper":p:o:(:D

Good stuff - Bedford is great for starting out on, there's just nothing to hit :D

Your Potenza's weren't RE050's though were they?

How come? You can't say something like that as a statement of fact, and then not qualify it.

Well they win every tyre test because they're great on a road, not on track.

Low road noise is good for driving on the road, but it just means they're soft, which is annoying on track.
