Uber to lose licence to operate in London

FFS

We should all Boycott black cabs, i refuse to pay their ridiculously overpriced fares. Uber was always so convenient and cheap, this has really annoyed me.

Complete opposite for me, was hoping to get the tube from North Greenwich to Heathrow last year, cue problems at Canary Wharf so stuck at North Greenwich, no taxis to be seen so checked Uber, still nothing available until ticking the agreement to pay extra, all of a sudden 4 taxis appear available around the O2 and cue a £150 charge to get to Heathrow, will never use Uber again and hope they are stopped from operating robbing barstools.

It's a totally different experience to what I found using Hailo in Dublin which was far more reasonable and convenient to use.

On one hand I hate black cabs almost as much as cyclists with thier blaitent flaunting of traffic rules, overpriced fairs and "woe is me I can't earn £100k pa anymore (£50k undeclared) because of competition" attitude

On the other since uber arrived traffic has skyrocketed in London and they also can't drive

On one hand I detest favouritism, and Black Cabs exploited their position - they are way to expensive and are dinosaurs - to me - the market have spoken and Uber is the adaptation of the industry that will survive.

However, however - that modern model is inherently flawed - there is a massive problem with Uber or Addison Lee implementation - both cab companies provide no control over number of vehicles in service within particular area and neither of them have ramps or base of any sort. It means that on any given day 90% of the fleet clusters around popular areas - next to train stations or office zones and just circle around the same streets indefinitely waiting for the next assignment - that creates absolute traffic chaos of slow vehicles circling like vultures in all crowded postcodes. There must be a limit of cars to register and limit of cars allowed to service given areas or it will never end.

If Uber cost the same as a normal Taxi I would still use it because i think the service is excellent. The fact it is cheaper is a huge bonus.

I was pleased they added the tip feature I have had some rides home from the pub for like under £1.50 and its almost embarrassing.

Well that sucks I hope it's not a trend.
Black cabs suck or blue where I am. Overpriced with none of the functionality. So useful having GPS pick up, price in advanced etc.

Glad I don't live in London, up here we have loads of PH companies that all take bookings online or on an app and allow card payments on the go etc. Even the 'Hackney Carriages' are proper saloon cars, not those black rust buckets you have in London.

No ones hoping you lose your job, it's just accepted by everyone who uses cabs now that black cab charges are extortionate. If they came more in line with other services it would be better, but they refuse to.

You do realise that TFL set the rates, not the drivers? With that logic you should go up to the cab of a great western mainline train and shout at the driver because your ticket is so expensive.

I'd actually be in favour of a price drop aafter 10PM. It's too much money.

I would have thought something like Uber would be more safer as everything is logged?

I think the argument is that the company have come too close to looking like they are covering things up - e.g. not reporting alleged crimes to police, purposely trying to frustrate efforts to check up on whether they are sticking to the terms of their license etc. I wouldn't expect them to go anywhere, they just have a few things they need to stop ignoring and not being so cocky about.

An Uber executive illegally obtained the medical records of one rape victim in order to refute her claim. Uber’s app also includes to functionality to evade authorities.

Uber is cheap when it suits them (surge pricing is not good), and they have an appalling disregard for customer privacy, customer safety and the law in pretty much every country they operate in*.

Uber in theory is a good idea, it's just a shame it's run by people who are more interested in making money any way they can than obeying even the most basic of legal requirements expected of any employer (such as informing the police if one of their employees is reported as having committed a serious criminal offence whilst on the job).

*This is the company that was actively tracking and showing the locations of famous customers at company events, developed applications to thwart enforcement of the law, does not do basic checks on it's drivers and when they are reported for things like sexual assault either doesn't report them to the police and licencing authorities (as legally required) but has been known to hire PI's to hunt down dirt on the victim.

As long as they are cheap what's the problem?

*sarcasm.

The reality is its just a bit of political posturing to show TFLs support for the Hackney and other PH operators, plus well TFL.

TFLs decision is also wholly correct though.

I dunno - I thought the use of a meter by uber was dodgy and should have been challenged/changed from the beginning - they were allowed it on a technicality that uber's meter uses GPS and wasn't connected to the car. That was pretty dodgy as until then the principle was that private hire firms like Addison Lee etc.. charge a fixed fee and only licensed black cabs could have a meter.

I'm not sure if the current decision is "correct" - at least from the perspective of my lay person's opinion on it as we don't seem to have many details re: how they've messed up within the areas cited by TFL.

There are other apps available and big private hire firms like Addison Lee - I was using their iPhone app in the same way I currently use uber before uber arrived in London

though yeah I hope uber does get to work this out with TFL
