Uber to lose licence to operate in London

A number of operators already do eg Addison Lee. I myself use 3 black cab e-hailing apps and do roughly 60% of my business on them.

great so I now need at least 4 apps to pay at least twice as much to get where I want half as fast.

Progress!!!

Welcome to Google's business model.
It's scary with cloud computing companies are building crazy positions Microsoft hosted email solution dominates the business world and I can see them cranking the price and making leaving a right pain in a few years time!

But both google and Microsoft do at least turn a profit Uber's use of venture capital to put local firms out of business is shocking!

which would anger the anti trust boards who would force Microsoft to split it as they have in the last

Seems like uber has been flaunting the rules long enough and TFL has finally said, no no, you need to comply and we can and will pull the plug if you don't abide.

I fully expect a resolution, there's no way either side will let this not get sorted. I don't think TFL at all wants uber stopped, this is just an ultimatum to sort all their practices out.

If it doesn't get resolved, that's 40,000 drivers out of work and an overloaded public transport system. Not good for anyone at all.

I had a laugh at the bypassing of mentioning how overloaded londons roads are.

Private hire transport is hilariously inefficient and encourages congestion.

Wait for ages for one & three turn up at once :p

Great service, crap company, good decision. If Uber has any sense they will put their house in order while pursuing the appeal.

Encouraging words from Uber's new CEO:

Engadget said:
New company chief Dara Khosrowshahi has sent out an email to his employees about London, and it shows that the company might truly be under a different kind of leadership now. One that doesn't sound like it'll encourage "hustlin'" and overlook bad behavior, such as obtaining rape victims' medical records through questionable means. Khosrowshahi told his employees and drivers in the internal email that while it's easy to think London's decision not to renew Uber's taxi license is unfair, "the truth is that there is a high cost to bad reputation."

He admitted that it really matters what people think of the company. So, going forward, he said it's critical "to act with integrity in everything" the company does and to learn how to be better partner to every city where it's active. By doing so, he hopes to show that Uber isn't just a "really great product, but a really great company that is meaningfully contributing to society."

500,000 signatures now lol.

so it's gonns be brought up in parliament

90% of people that actually use uber are entirely happy with it. Was always going to happen. It's the people that don't use uber that want to force their views on them driven by the paranoia created by the LTDA.

The anti uber lobby that has been pressing TfL for years would not care if uber was not a success. The LTDA have tried the legality approach and now its a smear appproach. To be fair no group has ever voluntarily given up a monopoly.

Why would it be brought up in Parliament?

It would have if the petition was the government petition website. I'm not sure where the petition was created.

The Mayor of London has felt the need to respond directly. It is clear that a lot of Londoners do not view the action as proportionate.

But they can debate whether TfL is wrong. TfL aren't the law.
Actually TfL are the law in this area it is upto them who does and who doesn't get a license!

Of course loads of Londoners are annoyed they enjoy the cheaper prices and convenience uber is a great idea but the company are scummy and something needs to be done about the anti competitive undercutting of every other taxi service using hedge fund backing to negate the massive losses. That's before you get into the working practices they follow!

Its only amongst the socialist monopoly that is the London cab trade can someone suggest undercutting is a bad thing. Many companies lose money initially. They also aren't actually making massive losses in the UK.

Their working practises are no worse than most of the PCO companies that exist in London. I would argue actually a lot better.

What do you think the working practices at your local minicab office are like?
