Ubiquiti UniFi Switch USW-FLEX-XG 10G M PoE+ - Switch

Hi,

Trying to connect a Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Pro Acces Point Wifi 6 via PoE and I get no power. I've tried multiple different cables and all ports on the router. Any ideas?

Thanks

You're trying to power the AP from the switch? It's not going to work - that isn't a PoE switch. You mentioned a router, this isn't a router, it's a switch.

The switch can be powered by PoE, but it doesn't output PoE.

Thanks mate. I thought the - in the title meant it could do + and -. Is ny best bet to buy an injector any other 10 g port you would recommend that can do PoE to power a device.

Who advertised it as that? Ubiquiti don't.

You do know the U6 Pro is only 1GbE?

I’m running one cable over the roof (into centre of house) so need a 10 gig hub I can plug my pc into too. Then one for the WiFi point.

Think I’m just going to do this properly. Get a small server cabinet can put my nas in there too.

What would you recommend happy to spend what makes sense. The dream machine?

Next time just order direct from the Ubiquiti store. They’re as cheap as any other retailer, actually sometimes have stock, and the support is OK, although not as good as the Rainforest where they genuinely just seem to accept anything back. And you can get it next working day, even though it’s coming from the Czech Republic.

Dream Machine SE if you must. That’s even PoE. I’m not a fan of UBNTs UniFi routers but if you want a complete UniFi system them Dream Machine SE is the best of what they have.

Think I will send it back. It initiallly worked perfectly, then post an update the router was throttling my download, tried different cables, factory reset all the same. Any ideas?

Using router 700/2400
Using cable straight to pc 2400/2400

To summarise then, you have some form of extremely fast internet connection - probably 2.5GbE synchronous?

And you want line speed to your wired devices and as much as you can get on your wireless devices and you like Unifi’s marketing?

Fair enough.

Then you want a UniFi Dream Machine (UDM) SE and that will take your 2.5GbE input into its 2.5GbE RJ45 or 10GbE SFP+ WAN port (you may need an RJ45 to SFP+ adapter depending on how your ONT is terminated).

You then link to your ‘hub’ switch - the UniFi USW-Enterprise 8 PoE is a 2,5GbE switch with PoE and an SFP+ uplink to the 10GbE LAN port on the UDM SE or you can go 10GbE with the USW-FLEX-XG that you already have (again, you’ll want an SFP+ adapter to link the UDM SE and the USW-FLEX-XG). So you now have a choice about your wireless LAN. If you go for anything other than the U6-Enterprise access point, you may as well keep your USW-FLEX-XG and power the access point off the UDM SE because they all have 1GbE links. If you go with the U6-Enterprise then you’ll need the USW-8-Enterprise switch and a SFP+ DAC cable.

Budget System :)

UDM SE
USW-FLEX-XG
SFP+ to RJ45 adapter to take the 10GbE LAN port on the UDM SE to a port on the USW-FLEX-XG
U6-Pro access point powered and connected direct to the UDM SE

That would give you wired 10GbE access for 3 clients and anything up to 900Mbps on WiFi.

Fastest WiFi system

UDM SE
USW-Enterprise 8 PoE
0.5M DAC to connect the UDM SE to the USW
U6-Enterprise access point powered from the USW-Enterprise 8 PoE
SFP+ to RJ45 adapter for the second SFP+ connector on the USW

That would give you 2.5GbE wired connections on up to 7 devices, a full 10GbE for 1 wired device and potentially over 2Gbps on a good quality WiFi6E client.

I would probably argue if you’re spending this much money, get the USW-Enterprise 24 PoE because it’s 3x the ports for another £200. But I am a salesman LOL!

Thanks mate - don’t worry I love the sale. Going to order the below. Assume I can then rack it too.

Just so I understand the adapter allows me use the 10 gp port on the udm se to make a 10 gig connection to the flex which I can then use for wired 10 gig.

Assume the u6 can go straight into the SE as Poe as it doesn’t need the speed

UDM SE
USW-FLEX-XG
SFP+ to RJ45 adapter to take the 10GbE LAN port on the UDM SE to a port on the USW-FLEX-XG
U6-Pro access point powered and connected direct to the UDM SE

Any idea why my current flex would be throttling my download and not upload.

Thanks again mate

Are you getting router and switch confused again?

I can't think of a reason why your download would be negatively impacted going through that switch. It isn't something simple like a port somewhere in the chain running at 1Gbps instead of 10Gbps as that'd affect your upload too.

What speed test tool did you use to get those results?

Sorry - yes switch.

Weirdly it was working perfectly then I updated the switch and speed dropped (download only) Using Speedtest.net but the same on all.

When I move the cable from switch directly to pc. Same speed test, same cable. No issue.

I’ve done a factory reset too.

I will order that tomorrow, ok if I double check the list before I press go. Get the fun of picking a small rack too.

Speed test sites are notoriously unreliable once you get above a few hundred mb. Some of their servers only have 1/5/10gb connections and you’ll not be the only one using them.

The reason you get a download /upload difference is because the vast majority of home connections are not symmetric but the server will be.

Imagine 30 people with 100/30 connections are using that speed test server and it has a 5gb connection and you come along with 2.5/2.5, there wouldn’t be enough bandwidth to do the download at full speed but there would on the upload.

All makes sense. The part I can’t explain is I do 10 in a row (with cable directly to pc) all over 2.2 gb. With the switch, all 10 runs less than 500 mb.

Might be one I just need to over.

Ok if I run list by you tomorrow before I order?

Thanks again
