Ubuntu clock weirdness.

OK.

I managed to get the SMP client up and running with Ubuntu on VMWare on my X2 4400+.

Everything seems to be working fine - except that the clock on the Ubuntu desktop is running at about 1/5th of the speed it should be

According to FAH I'm doing a frame in just over 2 mins (I wish) but in reality, it's about 10 or 11 mins.

Also, the ubuntu running under VMWare seems to be very jumpy and a bit slow to respond.

Anybody have any idea WTF is going on?

Stan :)

Check Ubuntu's System Monitor to see how much you're using?

You should have a bit left. I'm using 470mb atm on a native install with two SMP cores running and Firefox running.

This patch sorted it for me - seems to be an AMD thing

Like you my frame times were getting better and better till I realised

Sorted - thanks Rich.

Running fine now doing a P3025 at about 9 minutes per frame = approx 940 PPD + 1 windows client at approx 30 PPD giving me a total for that rig of around 970 PPD.

That'll do nicely :D

Next step is to set up Ubuntu as dual boot on one of the dedicated folders. If I get that to work then all of the dedicated folders will be doing it and the machines I use regularly will be getting VMwared.

Can't wait to try two cores on the C2Ds

Probably won't be doing any more today. I got home last night full of 15yo Glenlivet and Chilean Merlot courtesy of BA. I went to the shop and bought a couple of pies for supper, they tasted a bit off but in my drunken condition, I decided this wasn't a problem  The stomach cramps and Diarrhoea today, indicate it was more of a problem than I thought. I'm off to bed to feel sorry for myself and hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow and can get all this stuff done - try to make up for all the lost production thanks to BT's silly home hub.

Stan :)

lol Stan - you haven't been hanging round Huddy too much have you? Hope the pies wear off soon :)

Yep the C2Ds should easily be able to run two instances and give some pretty tasty output - can't wait to see the effect of all of these beasts back and crunching on the team total

Is it better to run two instances of the SMP client under VMware on a C2D then?

Steevo

Give it a go and see if the WUs are completing on time. In a native Ubuntu install I'm completing a pair of WUs every 16 hours or so with my e6600.

Ofcourse the time depends on what else you have running.

I get under 6 minutes per frame at the moment so with two clients running should I still complete on time? And is there a performance gain by running two clients?

Complete SMP noobness here!

Steevo

Yup if you open System -> Administration -> System Monitor you'll see there's quite some slack.
I had thought the slack was due to VMware but apparently the SMP client currently doesn't max out the CPU anyway.

It's much like the old HT argument over again - sceince vs points
In my mind as long as you'll complete the WU before you reach the preferred deadline (the point at which the WU is sent out again to someone else) then there's nothing wrong with it - in the case of most of these SMP units that's just 1 day so my X2 won't manage it :o

edit: yep with two clients running you should comfotably finish within the preferred deadline, mine is only managing about 11 mins a frame and that works out to about 20 hours - even if your frame time doubles (which it won't) you should still be ok :)

I am curious about this also. I noticed neither core maxed out but thought that was either the linux cpu thing getting it wrong or part of the smp client.

On 7 mins 10 secs (best time) per frame now,so lets say 12 hours. I thought the deadline was 48 hours? I know this unit has a 2 day deadline.

The SMP clients are pretty much maxing out my CPUs (native Ubuntu install).

They're around 97-99% each.

Getting around 8mins per frame on a 3025 and a 3027.

Seeing around 10 mins per frame here on my e6300 @ 3.15 which sounds about right to me. Should complete well within time. Happy days............

You would probably be alright since it should less than double the frame time - you'd certainly complete well within the 2 day final deadline but if you were using the machine for other tasks a lot you may go over the 1-day preferred deadline and someone else would be sent the WU you're already working on.

You still get the credit even if it's past the preferred deadline (as does the 2nd person who gets the same WU) but it does mean that 1 Wu's worth of work has effectively been wasted.

Give it a spin and see how it gets on?

Interesting, they assign it again if it goes past 1 day.

Hitting 7 mins/frame now which is very nice. I'll give it a go at some point :)
