Hi people

I reinstalled ubuntu earlier and supposedly formatted the new root partition but when it booted the items from the previous installation were still in the deleted items folder?? Has it done a type of 'quick format'?

Strange thing is that i changed the layout, downsizing the swap and allocating a home partition this time round.

Strange. Not too concerned just intrigued.

I just put Ubuntu on a thinkpad last night, and I noticed that it created a swap partition in addition to the root partition. Is it possible that this retains data?

I should specify that I only put Linux on last night for the first time, so I may be pretty wide of the mark.

P-Man if u formatted the root partition and not your /home partition (Assuming that u have one) Then no it wouldn't of formatted any of your files in your home folder including your rubbish bin.

So it hasnt done a quick format but it hasnt done a full format or everything.

The swap partition - From what i understand (Not a lot) - Acts kinda of like RAM but is a hard drive, so while its slower than RAM, it can speed up some stuff and therefore is worth having

If the filesystem that you used is reiserfs - that's why.

Reiserfs shouldn't be put on top of an old reiser partition without wiping it first.

I linux, you don't format a disk, you make a filesystem. If you make a reiser filesystem over an existing reiser disk, none of the original files are "deleted" and the fs will likely find the "lost" files due to the amount of error correction incorporated into it. It's a documented issue with Reiserfs 3. It will be fixed in 4 (if it ever comes out!)

The swap partition is a lot like the windows page file.
