I have installed Ubuntu via Wubi this evening but having a problem with loading it. When I boot to it this loading screens graphics are messed up. Once it gets to the login screen there are a few artifacts in the form of small straight black lines approximately 1cm across. But I can click about, change desktop environment and login. Once I am logged in the Gnome interface starts but is unresponsive, the same artifacts exist the only option now is to power cycle the system. I assume I need to manually install the graphics drivers installed via command line but is there anything else amiss here? Installation completely with out a problem after a couple of attempts (it got stuck reading file system first time).

Is the correct command "sudo apt-get nvidia-glx?" for installing the latest Nvidia drivers?

Thanks.

You should be able to install the restricted drivers from the gui. I can't remember exactly where it is but I believe it's system > adminstrator then look for something along the lines of drivers/restricted drivers. From there it should list the nvidia driver as not in use. Just tick the box, type in your password and it should install it automatically.

That said, it may not solve your problem. When you use ubuntu without the restricted drivers it's usually just at a lower resolution and without 3D support. I've never heard of people having artifacts and stuff.

The GUI is unresponsive after login. I can not click, go through menu's etc.

Tried with just the one monitor plugged in?

Yes. It shows the same result. Left one always has the same artifacts. I am able to type in the CLI so can enter the sudo apt-get command for the nvidia driver if I can find out what it is and am guided through any commands as I can't read the options or what I am typing.

It doesn't appear to do anything. At least from what I can see. Have since tried a reinstall to come to the same result.

The annoying thing is I really like CentOS. It is a brilliant server operating system and I am happy to work on it through CLI via Putty (It has only been connected to a monitor for the initial install and connected to once with VLC to install wine) but I've never had much luck trying to convert my desktop PC to Linux.

recovery mode should take you to a non GUI environment with a command prompt

I'd just like to say, I love CLI. Posting from Ubuntu. :D

(Had no ethernet adapter so had to edit the network adapter file with network addresses etc. and then those commands didn't work but I poorly configured Xserver so upon reboot it went into safe graphical mode where I could get into Ubuntu and install the Nvidia driver in a GUI).

Edit, celebrations seem a little premature. It's still not right. :/ No different from before (unless you count a half arsed attempt at loading the top and bottom bar?)
