UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 18th Feb 2021]

Not that inspiring so far. I know the offside flag made it irrelevant but Odegaard has to shoot there and not try to win the unselfishness award by passing it inside the six yard box (which then got blocked).

Opposition don’t look all that, which obviously means we’ll give them a goal at some point.

Typical EL Thursday night stuff really! Both sides have played like it’s an away game (which it is I guess).

Auba could have had a hat trick but looked like he used his goals quota up at the weekend, hopefully the subs can do something different but it’s one of those I’ll just be glad nobody is injured and hope they’ll win the home game (although is that being played in London given Benfica didn’t play at their gaff?).

Proper meh that. Got the feeling nobody wanted to go full pelt as there’s City next in the league at the weekend. If they’re that dull again and don’t get gifted another penalty we should be alright in the home game.

Does the XG take into account Aubameyang missing from 6 yards out?

You can't solely use XG when looking at a result. Not only that I think the poster is suggesting they should be battering the likes of Benfica which really they should be.

Of course it does.

xG simply looks at the quality of chances a side has and shows you the likelihood that they will result in a goal. It doesn't record attacks that breakdown without a shot at the end of them though. For example if a side has a 3 v 1 break, to most people that would be considered a good chance but if the final pass gets overhit and no shot happens at the end of the move it won't be recorded on the xG.

It's probably far too much work for the twitter stattos but clubs are able to tell you the xG not just of a shot but they can tell you the likelihood of a goal being scored, based on the positions of the players on the pitch, at any point of the game. Using that 3 v 1 break, they'll be able to say that the xG is x and if the player in possession played y pass it would increase/decrease to by this much. Obviously the data is far less useful the further you go back the pitch, with the xG getting smaller and smaller, but they could even tell you the xG based at the point of a goal kick.
