UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [6th - 8th September 2022]

Crazy scenes at the Nice - Koln match. The match has been delayed (maybe even cancelled) after fighting in the stands - flares being thrown back and forth by the two sets of fans and completely unconfirmed but my french friend thinks one person's been killed. I can't find any reports, even on twitter, to back that up though.

So we lost 0-1 last night.

Performance was OK but not great. The backdrop for the game was an exceptional circumstance which can't have made it easy for players and fans alike.

The minutes silence was impeccably observed.

The VAR decision for the penalty was absolutely ludicrous unless I'm missing something.

Still early days for Casemiro, but he looks laborious and well off the pace... bit of a worry.

Agreed never seen a minute's silence like it. You could hear a penny drop.

Ref was Italian so most likely on the brown envelopes. Haven't seen such a poor penalty decision since 09 Chelsea/Barcelona champions League semi final.

We really need Martial to get fit and stay fit and we were really missing Rashford last night believe it or not.

It's a shame what happened with Greenwood because I am sure he would be on fire now!

Nonsense penalty and even more nonsense VAR. I don't know how football manages to consistently make such an absolute mess of it.

Slabhead starts and we lose, quelle surprise.

We're a different team with Fernández wearing the armband.... and with Martinez' presence firing everyone up.

Antony was well marshalled but you can see what ETH went after him for.

Last season Ronaldo could make up for his pace with his clinical finishing, but that seems to have deserted him sadly, with the service from Eriksen he should have done better.

Casemiro was so bad.

I did question why we paid 60m for a 30 year old who we might only get 1 or 2 seasons out of.. but

The thing is and let's be honest here. Yes the penalty decision was bad.

But to win a game of football you need to score at least 1 goal. 2 and upwards usually We didn't score any so we never looked like winning, regardless of the penalty decision.

I don't think honestly that Antony, Elanga etc were materially affected by the news of the Queen and her passing. They just weren't good enough on the night.

I was expecting us to lose. Our squad is pretty weak (especially compared to a top team) so the reserve players are always a risk. Can't judge Casemiro from one match, maybe he's not match fit etc. Let's hope he turns out to be a panic buy we don't regret.

I mean, its not like the old days where you have a reserve team.

Harry Maguire was 80m. Lindloff 30m, casemiro 60m, Fred 50m, etc.

Sure we rested some of our first 11 but it was a home game in the Europa league vs a team who just lost their main striker to Newcastle and spent a total of less than 3/4 of 1 Casemiro on new players this season.

Last season they spent 2m on players (the same fee we paid to loan Dubravka) and the season before 9m on players.

Wasn’t a vintage performance but first European away game in a while with a rotated team, probably the hardest fixture in the group on paper, goals were well taken and nobody else picked up any knocks. New signings look promising (based off one game…), nice to see how much it meant to Marquinhos getting his first goal. Looks like he can do a job on that side if Saka is injured or having a bad day.

Those fees mean nothing, those players aren't worth what we paid, the value you used isn't indicative of their skill level. We know Maguire and Fred are crap, Lindelof is average, Casemiro unknown. VdB cost 50m!

Sociedad also best us in Europa didn't they, they have a champions mindset, our club doesn't, hopefully that's changing slowly now.

The fact is, our squad is weak and we will lose matches. You can say we didn't deserve to win because we didn't score but from what I heard we didn't really deserve to lose either.we
