Champions League - 27th @ 16:45 BST

Draw

Ten play-off winners join the 22 automatic entrants in the group stage draw at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco, where the 32 sides are split into four seeding pots and one from each is drawn into the eight groups. Seeds are based on UEFA's coefficient system and no team can meet another from the same association.

Where two sides from the same association qualify, they are paired to split their matches between Tuesday and Wednesday, so one club will always play at home on one day and the other will play away on the other day. In the case of associations with three representatives, only two teams are paired in terms of their fixtures; in the case of associations with four representatives, two pairings are made based on the TV audience.

To ensure sides from the same country play on separate days, the eight groups are distinguished by colour: Groups A–D red and Groups E–H blue. When a paired club is drawn, for example, into one of the red groups, the other paired club – once it is drawn – is automatically assigned to one of the four blue groups.

Teams from Pot 1 are provisionally placed in the first position within their groups, sides from Pot 2 provisionally take the second spot in their sections, and so on. Once the draw is completed, a computer draw determines the final position of the clubs within their group and therefore the order of the home and away matches.

Draw

The play-off winners, the ten losing teams from the UEFA Champions League play-offs and sides entering at this stage make up the 48 clubs that go into the group stage draw at the Grimaldi Forum.

The 48 teams are split into four seeding pots based on UEFA's coefficient system, with one from each drawn into the 12 groups. No side can meet another from the same association. Once the draw has been completed a computer draw will determine the final position of the clubs within their group and therefore the order of the home and away matches.

Champions league draw

On BT sport now.

As an Arsenal fan I would like the following

pot 1 - PSV/Benfica
pot 3 - Lyon/Roma
pot 4 - Malmo/Gent (anyone but Astana)

Wow, Astana would be a heck of a trip. They look like good bets to me, and interesting clubs as well.

Mind you, a big hitter to challenge you a bit in the group stage isn't the worst thing in the world.

Astana is ridiculous. Middle of Kazakhstan. Whoever gets them is going to suffer in the league following the away game.

Every year, it's an audience of footballers who couldn't possibly care less about all this meaningless guff. 3 mins talking about the winners, maybe one interview, then just make the draw and don't make a huge deal about it. I've never seen a fan on any forum or in real life who isn't irked by the awful draws for all competitions, they aren't fun or interesting. We want to know who is playing who and nothing else.

Oh, you draw one name from each pot and they are seeded... who knew that is how the draw works. Imagine if all football rules were recited by the ref just before every game, that would be exceedingly interesting.
