UEFA Champions League and Europa League Knockout Games **Spoilers**

thats never a penalty, seeing it in slow mo and whatnot

Referee think's it's a penalty
Commentators think it's a penalty
Pundits think it's a penalty
VAR didn't think it was an obvious error

OcUK posters think it's not because it was commited against a player in a United shirt.

What punishment should be given for a foul on an attacking player in the box be then? Last time I checked, penalties are usually given.

It's relevant when discussing how Utd are given 100x more penalties than the rest of Europe combined.

Again, irrelevant. Regardless if they have been awarded lots of penalties, the rules don't change based on how many penalties a team have been awarded season to date. It's a foul in the box and a penalty was rightfully awarded.

I have nothing against United.

It wasn't a penalty, if that's a penalty then we won't be seeing defenders ever trying to block shots.

Foul on Fernandes at the end there as well that an ex ref says is a "coming together" when the Sevilla defender just cleans out Fernandes. Comes straight across and into him, wipes him out and gets none of the ball.

Well it was, as a penalty was awarded. A defender can try and block a shot without making contact with a player's shins.

Its simplistic way of viewing it.

The more appropriate question is....does the punishment fit the crime? If you're going to give the offensive team a shot at goal one on one from 12 yards, you need to be dam well sure that the defenders have committed a larger enough foul to warrant that.

You seemingly didn't read what I said. If Utd are being awarded penalties for the same challenges other sides are not, it's relevant to the discussion around why Utd ave had so many more penalties than other sides.

For one reason or another, not all fouls end up in penalties. Utd have just had a season where every possible penalty for them (and some non penalties) have been given.

football is a contact sport buddy.

So is rugby... its a spectrum. Its not contact or no contact. If you make a tackle in the box, miss the ball and take out the player there is a good chance you will give away a penalty unless the ball ends up in the back of the net after your foul.

Yea, there is a spectrum of course, but a defender lunging for a block and makes contact after the shot has been taken is fair game in my book. I certainly wouldn't be giving penalties for that. Why bother? Allow the game to be determined fairly rather than through controversial decisions. Rashford had taken the shot, he was not impeded in any way shape of form, the ball should not have ended up in the back of the net

Which is irrelevant, the rules state that's a penalty - if referees choose to enforce it or not doesn't change the fact it was a foul in the box. If that happens outside the box, the ref blows and gives a free kick. You can, and probably will, argue the toss over it but it's a late challenge in the box.
Its only irrelevant tonight. I happens every single week and nothing.

Not going to lie, the keeper isn't having a blinder, we are just hitting it straight at him. Need to take some of these because we will lose this if we don't stick a couple of these away soon.
