UEFA Champions League/Europa League 1/2/3 November *** Spoilers ***

May I be the first to congratulate and thank Man U on their brilliant youth setup, what an unbelievable keeper Paul Rachubka is and I'm so happy he is part of the starting 11 for Leeds right now.

He only lasted 45 mins today but what a contribution.

:(

Just crap again really, we've been poor in all four group matches so far. We keep making an absolute meal of these games. Remember when we used to beat the likes of Brondby by 5/6 goals? Now we just look painfully average in these games. Thank **** we've got an easy group.

That was like a slow painful death, Uefa should really give us a bye into the knock out stages from now on we always get there in the end anyway but at least it would save the world from watching the drivel that we play in these games

Whole team were **** poor second half, Fabio & Jones our best players in the first half (and I thought we were bad enough then)

oddly enough i had exactly the same thought recollecting the 5-1s of old. at the end of the day this was an easy home win like basel was by the book. something just isn't right with the team.

look at how city just dominates villareal away and i only watched the 2nd half but villareal didn't get a chance. With united we just seem desperate at times when really we should just be controlling the game with just the quality of player we have. we can't shake off this direct or die play style, whereas last season we looked quite controlling at times, i.e the Marseille and shalke games.

Wow we're actually top of the group!! Happy Days, beat Benfica next game and that's top spot secured

What a dire 2nd half (bar the goal) in the City game. Pity Villareal's team was so depleted tonight, was almost academic once they went 1-0 up.

It was dire in both halves. If you looked up formality in the dictionary, you'd find tonights game. Composed easy performance, didn't look like we burnt anymore than we had too and kept our average goals a game ratio nice and high :D Only downside to the evening was Silva coming off wincing. Do not want. Do not want at all.

I even create a post waiting to have the **** taken out of me and no one even comments :(

What cares about the Champions League, it's all about the Championship.

We'll have to up our game, but I'm sure we will. We'll up it to the bare minimum to get a result again, it's the laziest football I've ever seen :p

Only positive thing is the standard of performances we're giving in this seasons group stage is no different to the performances we've put in against Bursaspor, CSKA & Besiktas in years gone by and we've still done well in Europe those years

It would be nice to get back to the days of turning over these minnows 4 or 5-0 but it seems like the players just struggle to get motivated for these non contests

Hoping the occasion of Utd v Benfica will produce a better game next time round

Best part of this evening, watching that sky sports lady talk, my god she'd get it,

Hayley McQueen? Oh yes she would :D

Shelvey hat-trick

i thought that rachubka lasted nearer 59 minutes.

funny though that Fergie said that Rooney was our best player on the night from midfield but when i talked about Rooney and midfield i copped a slating as though id recommended sticking him in net.

I'll bite.

1. We were playing minnows, a sterling midfield performance in a game like that does not mean he should be a regular midfield choice

2. It doesn't take into account the impact of taking him out of the forwards (might be a reason why we scored so little last night?)

3. He didn't look that happy playing there.

we were playing minnows almost every week compared to our own teams value/wage bill yet the performance of our midfield has been woeful. stoke, basel, that's without Rooney in midfield and him up front. except a penalty or two and a deflection last night he has not been on form like he showed at the start of the season.

had berba been played and been confident he could have easily bagged 2-3 himself last night.

he didn't look that happy but Im presuming he was man of the match based on the interview appearance after the match?

id settle for a 451or 4411 where Rooney can drop into midfield and get forward supported by two credible dm 's- which we have none of like a cambiasso / maschrtano giving Rooney that creative freedom.

the problem with Rooney is that he is blatantly our best footballer by a mile. he doesn't have the skill or balance of nani but in terms of effort and output he is a million miles better than the rest of the team. because our midfield is so awful we don't get him the ball and allow him to play. so he gets frustrated. he can easily get frozen out of a game up top and do so much more when he drops back. its unfortunate that the rest of our team cannot support this because of the insane one dimensional abilities of some our team around him.

fletcher - purely a harasser awful at everything else.
carrick - pure short passer

compare to scholes who could pass, shoot, hold the ball amazingly well make the play. now we need 3 players to do the job of one man. its sad to see.

Rooney was playing midfield because the options were very, very limited. And you can't see him dropping Wayne now can you?

It watched the first half and don't know if it changed in the second but he wasn't really driving forward, he was mainly pinging balls out to Jones/Valencia that were well placed passes and walking around a fair bit.

yea but its pretty poor that 1 midfield injury (cleverly) means that we play a striker in midfield out of necessity. you don't see robin van persie in midfield for arsenal despite the injuries and problems they had. similarly with city and chelsea.

we are either in this elite group with players who can play possibly the most important position on the pitch or we aren't.

at the end of the day i don't think that anyone can say that holding berbatov and not using the money to buy a credible cdm was not a mistake. we are one of the richest clubs in the world with the worst midfields (centrally) how does that work? something went massively wrong somewhere.
