UEFA Champions League/Europa League 12/13/14 April *** Spoilers ***

Well, regardless of losing today, we can still be proud that we outplayed them in the 2nd leg and should have had 2 penalties (Modric and Pav).
If Pav was any good, he could and should have scored the one that fell to him that he skied.

That is all in the 1st half and could have made it 3-0.

But still, on the costs of the 2 squads alone we were always underdogs.

If we can get a better RB and a keeper that the defence has confidence in, along with maybe 1 proven goalscorer, i dont see why we cant get 4th consistently with this squad.

going bit far saying we outplayed them

we did have some very good spells towards the end of the first half and for a lot of the 2nd tho

It is indeed, last year you won the league when you beat us at Old Trafford with some VERY dodgy decisions and an off side goal, **** happens.

The same game where a legit goal was disallowed? Yup. Love the way united fans bring that up when it's a meaningless argument.

Proud of spurs. Came down to sheer class of the opposition and lack of experience in such a cup.

Bale, Van de vaart, dawson and lennon were trying HARD.

They need champions league next year or i fear some players might jump ship

Raul is a legend, his awareness and the ball he put through for the second goal was immense. I just hope they give Man Utd a proper match, and don't just roll over. Overall Schalke will gain huge confident after knocking out the holders.

Yeah but they are hardly the same team they were when they won it, Schalke know that.

Spurs were pretty dreadful tonight, VDV did virtually nothing, Bale looked up for it but everyone else looked beaten from the start (which to be fair, they were).

Bale diving so obviously within a couple of minutes of the start didnt help Spurs at all , otherwise the Modric or Pav pen's may have been given (have seen those type being given but could also be described as harsh)

Bale and Lennon and Modric tried really hard and the defence did well in general (apart from Gomez' howler lol) VdV looked as though he couldnt keep up with the pace for some of the match which could be worrying (given that Spurs would want to continue getting better and playing against the best teams year after year)

All in all a couple of 1/2 chances which couldnt be taken, but after that nightmare 1st leg Spurs did well

No disrespect to Spurs at all, but Im not entirely convinced RM were really on it attack wise - they knew they had a nailed on semi place already, and they just looked a little relaxed... less frantic in pace/movement, they just didnt appear in anything like top gear imo

The ITV coms were a complete Harry-love-a-thon.

Highlights include:

"Forget the score, im going to give this game to Spurs!"

And

"No disrespect to Man City or Liverpool, but Spurs and Harry are the kind of team the viewers of the Champions League deserve to see!"

siigh

Dawson and Alonso we're the two best players on the pitch tonight. Liverpool should have done more to keep hold of him.

Watch Rafa's interviews with FF.

It was basically a case of the "new MD" (ie: Purslow) telling Rafa that he had to sell star players to invest in the squad, so he had no choice to sell Alonso (for huge profit) and attempted to buy 3 players with the cash, first was Aquilani, but when the second and third deals were wrapped up the owners pulled the rug and refused to release the remaining funds from the Alonso sale.

Couldn't agree more with this statement and certainly couldn't have asked more from Spurs.. We'll play a lot worse and up with a results against other teams but Madrid side were just too organised..

Negative notes - Gomez has made one too many howlers for my liking.. He saves plenty but these sort of mistakes cost games and vital points. VDV was poor imo.. He spends to much time injured and certainly has been the impact player he was when started. I'm not too fussed if he stays or goes tbh.

Positive - Modric well.. what can you say about this player.. His work rate, passing and intricate passing is superb.. Good to see Huddleston back in there too.. Overall I thought Spurs played very well.. it was just a shame they got caught in the headlights at the Bernabéu. This is where their lack of experience showed. Next 4 weeks are going to be intesting :)

Which game were you watching then?

Another jem was AEK on Ronaldo got a:
"He needs to be careful with challenges this early on in the game"

Same challenge by Ramos on Bale:
"You know, he meant to get his man there, you can see he's scared of Bale and wants to intimidate him"

Personally think Spurs REALLY need to get a CL spot again , but not from a "keeping the squad together" angle at all, as I think thats more than managable (even without Levy being the hard negotiator he is known to be)

More from the money being pumped into Liverpool and City (and who knows maybe Chelsea as well) , I think Spurs may struggle next season if they arent in the CL again

I really hope they make it - but its a tough ask

Not trying to rub salt in the wound but I've heard a lot of crap in the media over the last day or so, can't believe you think you outplayed them last night! They were in control for nearly the entire tie and if they weren't devoid of ideas up front (short of give it to Ronaldo and let him have a stupid shot) the scoreline may have been worse, they had a lot of commanding possession
