UEFA Champions League/Europa League 13/14/15 March *** Spoilers ***

I guess the question has to be asked if Mourinho can do it anymore. Or has the game moved on and he too stuck in his ways. Like with his buddy Wenger, albeit with different flaws.

Why are people being so weird about this? Mourinho played this way since forever, it was 'outdated' in 2005. I'll keep saying it, you take a hugely offensive team and stick a manager who can provide temporary motivation and defensive solidity in and that team will improve for a short time but long term forget how to attack as a team and eventually get poorer defensively also. He has NEVER defended with good tactics, training and improving players. He takes teams that had a standard back 4/3.... and adds more numbers to them, then tries to hit on the counter. Now doing that with Stoke with Crouch up front and lots of useless players throughout the team means you can make the team harder to beat but horrible and midtable if lucky, if you do it with the squad Ranieri built with top of the table quality throughout then you get a title.... but also a collapse.

Mourinho's tactics have always been similar to Pulis's but with squads 50 times better and thus much better results. If you put Drogba and Robben in the Stoke side to catch people on the counter and hold up the ball.... you don't think they'd have won a load more games with the same tactics?

Nothing has changed, and this is what is unbelievable. Mourinho was fired from Chelsea, left Inter quickly, fired from Real, fired from Chelsea again and for the same damn reason every single time, he lost the squad, short term slight uplift.... Chelsea were only not champions due to the invincibles and the squad just being put together, Inter were champions in a league where the competition was relegated/docked points and a lot of their best players all left so Inter had the pick of the talent in the league, Real just spent a basically unprecedented amount of money on the team but had the same issue as Chelsea, just needed some time to gel with such a huge change, Mourinho did worse in his first year there.

Utd are getting the 100% exact same result of hiring Mourinho that Chelsea, Inter and Real all had after hiring him. Inter he left before the downfall, but spending huge on ageing players for short term results/thinking and turning them into dire anti football team... make no mistake if he didn't fluke to another CL with a load of bad decisions and horrendous football he would have overseen another embarrassingly huge decline caused by him, his style, his training and his short term transfer thinking.

Holy wall of text. I’m not saying he’s changed. Just that what used to work/get end results may not any more, so he either has to adapt or die. It’s quite simple and doesn’t need an epic to describe.

If you bothered to read it, the point is nothing changed, he's getting the same result today as a decade ago. The difference is he inherited a side with an actually solid defence and a ridiculously boring attack. So you bring in a guy whose sole success has come with taking attacking sides mostly in form and getting them to play more defensive and counter attacking football. Even when he does this it works in the short term only. He's never once put together a great attack, he's inherited and made worse attacks. You could argue with Fabregas/Costa he put together part of the Chelsea attack, but he bought form and within 6 months their form was significantly worse and 6 months after that they could barely play football any more.

I'm fairly sure that at the time Mourinho was hired, before any results I said that he'd struggle because he'll spend money but building a more defensive/negative team on top of a good defence but poor offence would not go well. Improve in terms of league due to just big spending and better players as the squad wasn't great, sure. But create a great team, Mourinho literally can't do that, create a really effective team, nope, didn't think that either.

Mourinho has one chance for very short term success, a team that could do with a bit more motivation and has a great offence but a leaky defence, anything else and he won't create a good team, he never has and nothing about his style suggests he could. He came back to Chelsea claiming he wanted to end his career there but couldn't make it more than 2 years again.

THe difference is Utd weren't the same type of team with the same problems that CHelsea or Real had when he took over.

Besiktas 10 minutes away from getting knocked out of the Champions League with a 7-1 aggregate loss singing their hearts out, making an incredible amount of noise, waving scarves, in fantastic spirit. You'd think they just won the Champions League.

If they were an English team, half the stadium would be at home already.

Edit 8-1 now but no let up from the Besiktas fan base.

As I said, football changed whilst he didn’t and what he does which used to bring success doesn’t now. I’m not saying he’s doing anything different.

Last time I'll bother, football hasn't changed in the slightest. He took over a club in a different situation. The exact same thing is happening at Utd as everywhere else, with a different starting point. The players are getting worse, they are becoming disjointed upfront, their enthusiasm for playing when being told to run and hide against anyone of any threat in any important game has a negative effect on the team.

Nothing changed since his time at CHelsea at all. The sole difference is Chelsea were both a dominant team outspending the closest team by several times over, had a brand new squad that just needed a year to gel and had a very attacking style. Add motivation, giving 110% and a get them to drop deeper in the hard games with extreme quality to hit people on the counter and you improve...slightly... for a short time before the negativity snowballs and the team falls apart after 2-3 seasons. At Utd he had a team with a poor offence, fine defence and a good mentality, they were digging draws and defending for their lives very well, they just didn't have enough quality upfront.

Am I the only one who doesn't rate Courtois? Caballero would have saved that.

He hasn't been great for a while now to be fair. Still a very good keeper but not as good as he once was. Not sure whats changed.

Willian on the other hand has been in ridiculous form this season.
