That's very true, it's often said one of the many hallmarks of Fergie's Manchester United sides is their ability to work very hard up until the final whistle, even if that whistle should have been blown five minutes before.

First, Pique and Puyol are both World Class defenders :cool:

Puyol less so, he's now basically falling apart due to the levels of intensity he plays at. Pique is a wonderful footballer. Literally just disagree with you right there DM.

Also, no, Cesc's form has been very poor as of late :o
 
Puyol has been in/out for ages and should have had a replacement their already. He was immense around 3 seasons ago. Last 2 he has knee injuries and others.
Pique is much better when along side Puyol and as above Puyol has been in and out of the team for last 2 seasons. Pique is still young and should still be learning, he was learning from Puyol but they need another already established defender.

They have Masch there who does a decent job considering its not a natural position but then he has no one along side him.

They shouldn't have let Yaya go he was so strong in CM, they let Keita go who at one point was one of their most used players if I remember correctly. Pep would bring him on to sure things up and he did a great job.



Their passing is not as crisp/sharp/fast as it use to be, they seemed to be lacking something. They appear to give the ball away and not defending as well from the front. They shipped 4 goals last weekend and it took a hatrick from Messi to win that game 5-4.

Abidol has health problems not much can be done about that but at least they have brought in Jordi Alba which is a start. Really a replacement for Puyol should already be in that team. They buy song which is quite strange buy, from what I had heard it was because they were priced out of who they wanted so went with a midfielder in the hope of having him play in CB position if needs be. That works, on occasion. But then they end up getting caught out of position as they lack the awareness.

He's so so poor, defensively he's just rubbish and he's only been made to look good for so many seasons because of the others around him, he is DEFINITELY NOT world class.... And also lol, what a joke that Cesc's form has been very poor, he is always the best every move he is involved in Barca score from he is the best footballer ever, you are WRONG... JUST WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG YOUR OPINION IS WRONG.....

Pique is 25 now. He should be at his "peak" surely? He isn't young at all.
 
Well take away his spell at utd and his loan move where he probably learnt very little and then put him along side Puyol where even he himself has said he keeps him in check and paying attention. When you have Puyol in and out of games for 2 seasons now, who does it leave him playing along side? Usually a make shift CB
 
Pique's a wonderful centre back and his 'form' has only dropped due to him getting a bit fat and lazy at points last season, which was probably related to the woman he's living with ;)

Puyol should have been 'replaced' you're right, but it's difficult to go out and buy a replacement for someone of that ability without breaking the bank. Puyol will be replaced when the right player is available for the right money.

Cesc's from has been very poor, I watch a lot of Barcelona and his form isn't at the level people have come to expect from him. He was good in Barcelona's previous game, but it's been average by Cesc's standards.
 
Shameful performance by the ref and the linesmen tonight - Chicharito should have had a hatrick and Utd should have had 4 or 5

Chicharito motm with Cleverley not far behind, RvP and Rooney worked hard even if not that much worked for them.

Criminal defending in the first 25 minutes especially, but what else do you expect with a midfielder playing as centre half, and a budget lb thats had 2 starts including tonight (Buttner was good going forward, but he was very much to blame for one of the goals).

Nani was unlucky not to score and looked lively and worked hard (which is an improvement on recent performances). De Gea was lucky not to cost Utd a goal late on(and therefore a draw most likely), with a daft mistake
 
I actually thought the ref did ok, he played some very good advantages (two that stood out were RvP for the goal and Hernandez down the left)

Linesman was shocking though, that second offside wasn't even close to offside.
 
Manchester United should be used to having a poor left back defensively? :o

It's not an ideal situation for any team to be in, having to play midfielders in defence... sounds a bit like another European side tonight :o
 
Well Barca chose to do it, they had Montoya on the bench. Could easily have played him and stuck Bartra in the middle.

Mind you Fergie chose to do it too.

I thought the ref was close enough to Hernandez for the non-goal to rule it ok (I believe he is entitled to do this after all).

It wasnt that close to being offside

I think puyol is better than pique as a cb. They are a good pairing.
 
Exactly.

Without wanting to agree with Frank, he's right when he mentioned that it's to be expected. Two sides playing at the highest club level both had to play midfielders as their centre back pair.

It's not the position they're used to playing nor the roles, the entire game must be very difficult under normal circumstances let alone against other very good European sides (and Celtic)

I do too, I think Pique is a wonderful footballer but Puyol is (was) an immense defender.

Puyol is falling apart and Pique's form has dropped off a bit last season, still one of the best partnerships in European football, easily.

I half expect this to almost be the end of Puyol, I can't see him playing much longer.

Pique can only improve on what is already a magnificent player.
