Had a close look at how Mertesacker is performing, and all I can say is that the guy is struggling. The game seems too fast for him, he's too slow and cannot actively contribute to Arsenal's style of play. He's just like a big tank as someone said before, all gooners can count on is the headers he might win for you lot or the blocks he makes, otherwise he does seem to struggle.
Frankly I've barely seen him win any headers, at set pieces, I'm not sure if thats down to the awful zonal marking system we're trying or the fact that he is just to slow to get to where the cross is going, it feels like the later as he just can't seem to get on the end of attacking freekicks, defensive freekicks, or general crosses/long balls into our defence.
Tonight, looked pretty poor, made a meal of beating a team who out played us for large portions of the game, have been crap away from home in Europe for years, awful in England, and managed more shots on and off target. I'd not have minded that right wingers shot going in, as it was frankly awesome.
Santos, I don't think I saw him in line with our back four even once all game, seems awful defensively, ok going forwards, but how is that different to Traore or Gibbs? Ok, we needed numbers, only because we got shot of Traore and Eboue, yet again we haven't upgraded, just sidegraded. Also, I'd be surprised if a Brazillian international, playing in a high wages stupid league isn't on higher wages than either Traore or Eboue was on, so we've got someone who seems equally incapable defensively, for more money, wooo.
Sagna actually seemed pretty useful with blocking crosses for large portions of the game, not sure if he's improving finally or if it was the players he was up against.
AOC, nicely taken goal but, not quite decided yet, again I feel with the type of player he is, we need two strikers to make him, and Arshavin effective, and Ramsey/Arteta. He's a bit too small and not quite fast enough to burn people on the outside, and he's a decent passer with good movement, he need's people like the second striker to get the pass, then continue his run in behind and get on the end of a pass. All our midfielders need that, but again our lone striker looks isolated for most of the game with very little interplay in the final box that actually looks dangerous.
