UEFA Champions League/Europa League 5/6/7 March *** Spoilers ***

No point mentioning that pairing did "ok" vs Reading then.

There is when you come out with anecdotes like they rarely convince as a pairing

Not that I expect you to admit you were wrong

What should I admit I'm wrong about?

Yes its only one opionion that they havent worked well in a few games in the past but it does mention a number of games where that pairing havent shone.

Did you actually read your link Frank? Because unfortunately I just have and it doesn't mention a number of games in which the pairing hasn't worked at all it simply lists a set of fixtures in which one of the two (mostly Evans) has made individual errors and suggests why they shouldn't work as a pair due to them being too similar. But yes like you said it's one journo's opinion, at least he's done some research into his claim though ;)

As for the Barcelona stuff you've skated over what my point was, beating Barcelona twice isn't easy despite what you think, Real Madrid had to play well and will have taken more than just a moral boost from the games. Playing wise they're in very good form now and better form than they were before the first leg.

And because of Frank this is how rumours start :(

Fergie said today that he needs to choose 2 from Ferdinand, Evans and Vidic, all 3 are fit. For thread purposes Jones has been ruled out meaning no man marking job on Ronaldo this time.

" The only other occasion Ferguson has selected Evans and Smalling alongside each another in the league, it ended in disaster. At home to Bolton last March, Evans' tackle on Stuart Holden resulted in the American suffering an injury from which he is yet to recover. Evans was sent off, and was suspended for three games"

When Evans and Smalling were fielded together in a Champions League game at Benfica (when Sir Alex Ferguson played something of a second-string side), they were bullied by Oscar Cardozo, the 6ft 4in, bullish, powerful No9 who waltzed past Evans to thump in the opener. When used alongside each other at home to Crystal Palace in the League Cup, they conceded the winner from a set-piece – Evans lost the journeyman Palace striker Glenn Murray the way Vidic never would, and Murray nodded in to put United out

Smalling was nearly embarrassed when Tomas Rosicky capitalised on his slip and squared to Van Persie, who contrived to miss from 10 yards, but such a slip is hardly indicative of a major flaw in his defending.

Thats four different games at least (and you could only think about Reading this season where they had even played together at c-h, but no of course you werent wrong about that either)

Without even considering the majority of these players are nothing really to speak about (ok admittedly Rosicky was playing alongside RvP , so it could be the latter's movement causing difficulties but even so)

whether you like it or not Tom that IS damning evidence from just over a year ago.

My point stands, they dont play often enough together to combat a team like Real, and for the most part when they do play together they look shakey.

Centre-half's play as a PAIR for a reason , you can say they are individial mistakes but thats skirting the issue they are not suitable to playing together against a top team. And yes two of those quotes do mention THEM rather than "individual" mistakes.

but hey ho its you, so its not surprising

It seems unlikely that Vidic would feature, based on recent recent games after he's played. As much as Evans has improved I would feel far better if Vidic started this one...
The team I suspect we might see is:

--------------De Gea--------------
Rafael--Ferdinand--Evans--Evra
Welbeck---Giggs---Carrick---Kagawa*
---------------Rooney*
----------------RVP

*or the other way around
But it's impossible to predict really, there's almost no telling which 11 from perhaps 20 players will start.

Kagawa has definitely got himself a place. I also think Giggs will start.
I also think he'll start with Rooney on the left to bulk up midfield and Kagawa as the link guy before RVP.

--------------De Gea--------------
Rafael--Ferdinand--Vidic--Evra
Nani/Val---Giggs---Carrick---Rooney
-------------Kagawa
---------------RVP

Have you had a bang on the head Frank?

Since when does (for example) a defending going in two footed on the opposition and getting sent off been an indictment of how good a pairing he is with another defender? Has all the times Vidic has been sent off against Liverpool meant him and Ferdinand aren't a good pairing either?

You can roll your eyes at me all you want but the problem here is your understanding of the link you provided.

Since moving house I've not had Sky Sports, so football has been limited for the past 5-6 weeks.. Which is making me stupidly excited about this match! :D

Real Madrid team: Diego López, Varane, Ramos, Coentrão, Khedira, Cristiano Ronaldo, Özil, Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa, Higuaín, Di María

Subs: Adán, Pepe, Kaká, Benzema, Albiol, Modric, Callejón

unless he broke something in training I dont get why he isnt in the squad at all (Cleverley didnt actually boot him in the mouth did he? lol)

Giggs as a starter - thats pretty ballsy, also concerned about Vidic's knees on the OT turf for the 2nd time in 4 days
