UEFA Champions League/Europa League Quarter-Final Draw - 21st March

United - Bayern will have all the pillaging and killing of a medieval Nordic invasion but with the efficiency and class of a German accountant.

I didn't think you got into the CL anymore as winners?

Where did you hear that had stopped?

All bar Chelsea/PSG should be good games, particularly Barca/Athleti and Real/Dortmund. United/Bayern will be good if its 400-0, otherwise disappointment, english teams are boring in europe

Is there any way Man U could pull off a shock?

I don't think there's even a slight chance but surely if there's any they need to keep a clean sheet at OT and then hope to nick a goal in Germany?

Based on Moyes' tactics of never going for the kill and defending as soon as we have the result we need, I can't see any hope of us winning either game but we can always hope.

My current expectations as a United fan extend about as far as hoping that we put out a team without Young in the starting XI at the moment.

I would predict that we will get soundly pasted but I have learned to deal with that this season quite well.

There's always a chance. If we play at our absolute best and Bayern don't turn up (which has happened occasionally), we have a slight chance. Emphasis on slight though.

this is the last season cl winners are auto qualified for next season so if utd would win they would knock out whoever is 4th in the epl

Really? Will they be put into the Qualification round or be out of it all together if they finish lower than 4th? Seems odd considering the winner of the Europa League gets automatic qualification and the winner of the CL doesn't.

Nearly every match United have played this season they have conceded loads of chances, even in the 'comfortable' 3-0 win the other night Olympiakos could still have scored 3-4 goals. Will Bayern be that wasteful in front of goal?

Even if United by some miracle take the lead they will just sit back and try to defend it and get ripped open.

I'd like the following formation:-
-------------De Gea
Rafael Smalling Evans Buttner
----Fellaini Carrick Giggs
----Kagawa RvP Rooney

I would drop RvP for Nani but it ain't gonna happen. If we aren't motivated against Bayern the nothin will motivate us to play to our best.

Manchester United ‏@ManUtd

Moyes on @ChampionsLeague progression: "I've got us to the quarter-final and now the aim is to get to the semi-final."

#mufc boss on today's European draw vs @FCBayernEN: "It's a tough one but we're looking forward to it."

Moyes can sense the win!

You would put Nani in as a false 9? Or would you swap Rooney into the middle and Nani/Kagawa on the wings?

I thought Kagawa was more of a Mata player, wanting to float and be in the middle, though (as with us all) I haven't seen much of him.

It's a very inexperienced defence. Evans the only one with proper experience behind him, and is he the leader you'd want against a side as good as Bayern?

Whilst I don't rate him, I would play Evra for his experience, and I would play Vidic too.

De Gea

Rafael (unless they have anyone better? I think he's very poor and likely to get sent off)
Evans
Vidic
Evra

Nani
Carrick
Fellaini
Giggs
Rooney

RvP

Flat back four, Carrick and Fellaini covering, RvP up top and the rest going where needed.

Evra is out of the first leg Gilly.

If we can get Nani fit and firing then he's really the only winger who can challenge the Bayern defenders and beat them, and that's only if he's playing well.

I'm hoping he'll play tomorrow.

Nani would go wide and Kagawa would start wide but drift in with Rooney as the striker. Kagawa has experience against a strong Bayern team so he has to play.

Evra is suspended. He's defensively not that good, imagine him tracking back to stop Robben, it won't happen. Buttner has the legs at least to get back. Rafael and Evra have been defensively poor for the past few games. Smalling and Evans is our best CB partnership. Smalling is extremely under rated, people judge him at RB where he cant play.

That's that scuppered then. I really don't think Buttner is the answer. Can Jones play left back? He doesn't really have a position yet!

That's be two weak fullbacks against flying wingers though.

[edit]I think Smalling is the closest thing to a natural centre half outside the aged players, I just don't think he's there yet.

Evra out is a nightmare..

Jones( Smalling?)/Ferdinand/Vidic/Rafeal
--------Carrick-----Giggs
Nani---Rooney--RVP----Welbeck---

Something like this maybe?

Valencia/Jones probably have to play though since they won in the last game..

Don't think Nani will be fit though, shame, good player on his day..

Last time we played Bayern Rafael absolutely dominated Ribery, until Ribery resorted to cheating and getting him sent off.

Is Nani actually back from injury then? I find it really hard to actually find out injury updates on our players, they never seem to stick them on the website or anything :(

That draw could've been worse I guess although I've no idea how good PSG are to be honest :o

Do we reckon it's better to play first leg at home or second?

All the managers seem to want the 2nd leg at home and group winners always get it that way in the last 16 so there must be something in it, so that must be a plus for us :)
