The introduction of Tierney is the same vibe as Aubameyang: Giroud was a perfectly serviceable striker, but the Gabonese immediately raised the quality, hunger, professionalism, ability to impact at big moments. Watching Tierney's quality and security in possession and delivery - finally a fullback who can cross! - you can see immediately that he will be a player that makes a difference.

Martinelli was excellent; movement outstanding and just simply a threatening player. Nelson did himself credit too, particularly. 90 minutes for Bellerin and Holding was a boon.

Finally a feel-good factor. But unlike the Wenger Cup team that had Vela, Owusu-Abeyie, Aliadiere etc, it's easier to see both a route into the team and the quality of some of these young players to make an impact. There are a couple that are short (e.g. Maitland-Niles), or may not transition, but we have a really solid crop of young players here. And after years in the doldrums, the scouting department deserve credit for picking up Guendouzi and Martinelli in particular. Second and third-tier footballers in their nation, we've pulled a fast one.
