Not quite, because the punishment would correlate with the impact of their rule breaking.

If the punishment had to take into account or estimate the impact of the cheating, how could you accurately determine this?

If Celtic had lost on penalties, could the impact of that ineligible player have been the difference between winning and losing? You'll open yourself up to countless appeals from clubs and endless debates as to precisely what impact a certain rule violation could have had. It's a no-win situation.

It's easier to disqualify the offender as they've done in this case. The clubs all know the rules, and it's up to them to make sure they abide by them.

How could Legia make such a mistake? Surely given the amount of money involved, they have people checking details like this. It's really incompetence on their part, sadly.

Why aren't the fourth officials aware of suspensions etc and stop this sort of thing from happening? it's not like they do much.

I personally would like to see common sense prevail over the written law in this case, if they had played the guy for the majority of the match then sure throw the book at them but what they did had zero bearing on the result.

Normally I am a real stickler for the rule book but this is one case that has me questioning my morals. The real kicker for me is that having missed 3 matches I can totally see how this might happen, it's not like some admin guy just forgot about the ban from a previous season, they made him sit out 3 matches but mucked up by not registering him.

Poor player must be distraught, that two mins has potentially cost his club CL football and he probably thought he'd served his ban.

I agree that with the amount of money floating about in football these days UEFA could help nip these sort of situations in the bud by vetting every match day squad against a list of eligible players.
