UEFA Euro 2012 - Group A - ** spoilers ** (Czech Republic, Greece, Poland, Russia)

I switched Szczesny out of my FF team, then laughed at my mate when they lost and he was sent off.. Then Cech (my replacement) goes and leaves 4 in :(

Karma!

Sounds like the Russia game was the one to watch

Watched the Poland vs Greece game, in one sense the Polish must be kicking themselves after the first half dominance and at least three decent chances resulted in only one goal.

Greece were much better after the break, penalty /sending off of g/k was warrented , although Greek sending off was pretty harsh (and spanish ref got a little card happy). Penalty wasnt brilliantly taken, but it was still a decent save for stand-in g/k in that situation.

Still thought all in all that Polish should have won, although not by much (because of how much Greece improved in 2nd 45mins)

One thing I think is a little strange - Automatic red = 1 match ban (given the tournment thats probably fair), but what does that mean for 2 yellows, the same length of ban (which imo is silly if its the case).

The most interesting part of the match, that bit where the flaming thing was thrown in the pitch, and they cut to endless replays of the goal?

I WANTED TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FIRE FFS.

It's all a conspiracy.

Russia look very good think there defence will be there downfall when they meet the bigger teams

Might not matter, they looked sporadically very very good going forwards. If they start Pav with Arshavin making 4-5 truly excellent throughballs a game and making several great penetrating runs and probably getting a few chances himself.... if they could make more of the chances he makes they both could have scored a crapload more tonight, and they could potentially outscore most teams in the tournament.

I'm not sure any teams in the tournament look solid defensively, we'll have to see. If Russia play as they did tonight but have someone who can finish well on throughout the game, they can probably pick holes in every defence quite easily. Will Arshavin stay in form, will Pav start, can Pav put in the same performance in all the games.... who knows. They certainly looked promising though.

Looked like a flare.

It's standard practice to cut to replays / away from an event like that, as it is seen to sensationalise the event otherwise. Same as when a streaker runs on.. They never show it.

Can't see it myself, he's out of contract so can sign for anyone and will want big wages, also being 31 likelihood is Wenger would only want him to be offered a short-term deal. Approaching the twighlight of his career he'd likely also want to start most games which is something that looks increasingly unlikely at Arsenal following the signing of Podolski (I'm aware they aren't like-for-like but you can only pick 11 players), from his perspective he may feel hard done by at not being selected much recently so want to move somewhere with a guarentee of first team football.

Wenger's already shown he didn't trust or believe in Arshavin(he did this while he was bang in form and better than all but Fabregas/Wilshire/RVP), after that his form dissappeared and Wenger gave him even less chances to play so can't see Wenger signing him and certainly can't see Arshavin signing a new contract even if offered.

He could improve just about every team in the prem league, joke how we both treated him and let him run out his contract. Had we not arbitrarily dropped him, killed his form, we could have easily sold him for the same we paid for him, instead we threw it away giving Walcott more games and backing Nasri as our "main" forward player, well done Wenger.

Would love to see him stay in the league, great seeing him play, should be a bunch of sensible teams who will offer him a good wage though I can only really see in the EPL Spurs, maybe Liverpool matching the wages he could get by going home. Realistically he's not enjoyed his time here, can't see anything but him staying in Russia now. :(

Gutted with our performance last night.....despite dominating the first half we threw an easy win away. Most of the Polish players looked unfit and slow bar Lewandowski, Obraniak and Blaszczykowski, and this happens every damn tournament, have no idea what they do in training.

Szczesny getting sent off was a blow, not a good night for him at all.

Disappointing opening, thought 3 points was a given there. Russia on Tuesday will be interesting!

Wenger to give Arshavin another chance next season...? I've always liked him and thought he was misused.

Highly unlikely...as much as i like Arshavin, i just found him last season before he went on loan to be extremely lazy ie never tracked back and just didnt look like he wanted to be on the pitch for Arsenal. One of the reasons why Wenger sent him back to Russia, where imho i think is the best place for him. Since hes been at Arsenal, hes had a couple of excellent games for us, despite what DM rants and raves about. One was the Liverpool game where he scored 4 goals or something and the other was when we beat Barca at the Emirates in the CL QF's before we got thrashed back at Barcas ground.

Since then hes been largely unimpressive. Yes he played well last night against a poor Czech side but as someone said in another thread, just because hes done well on the international stage doesnt mean he will be any good in a domestic league.

Dont get me wrong, id love to see him stay at Arsenal but also id love to see him do more of what he did last night if he does stay on at Arsenal next season. But it doesnt look likely tbh.

Arshavin would be far better if we played him in his best position much more often. I can only see him staying at Zenit, he's probably happier in Russia anyway.

.

Don't forget the brilliant game where we went 4-0 up against Newcastle, he got two assists, was substituted in the 69th minute despite being pretty much the best player on the pitch, at which point we conceded 3 goals in 21 minutes.

He had 10 goals and 18 assists that season for Arsenal in all competitions, Nasri had 16 goals and 4 assists, yes thats 8 more goals he was involved in than Nasri, playing out of position in a role he doesn't really like.... but he had a terrible season.

It's funny how much Nasri was loved for that season, Arshavin had a better season yet most Arsenal fans randomly choose to believe he was utter ****.

He had a very good season for us, his first half season was excellent, his second season was slightly less good but still not bad, his third season was simply very good. Last season he was benched from pretty much the start, made clear he wasn't going to be a major part of our champs league squad, was actually fit and present while Arsenal sold off Nasri and Cesc without using them as we lost, he scored the goal that won us our first game of the season, but was dropped for big games and basically told flat out that he wasn't that important any more.

He then started to play like he wasn't trusted, wasn't certain to start and wasn't in Wenger's plans.

Anyone saying a 10 goal 18 assist season is poor and only had one good game in it, is deluded.
