He made a pass so his previous crapness means his starting was justified, what about the joke crossfield pass he wanted that was about 20 yards wide of it's target. He's playing in a position where he's supposed to get on the ball a lot, he'll get the ball and make passes. He might even score or assist a couple of goals, that doesn't mean someone else in that position wouldn't do better and get better results for the team.

He missed one, massively badly, and crossfield passes are misleading, they are long and slow and gives the player waiting to receive it a huge amount of time to move and be where the ball is going. They are easy passes and often hide mistakes. Where Rooney sucks is short creative passing in tight spaces where he often makes a sideways or crossfield pass rather than making the cutting pass that tears a team's defence to pieces. Anyone can smack it to the other wing, it's only England that since it's the only thing Rooney can do and Gerrard did constantly talk about it like it's the epitome of midfield play.
