UEFA EURO 2016 Qualifiers and International Friendlies ** spoilers ** [3rd - 9th September 2014]

He's just played shocking every simple pass he's tried has gone to the other team he shouldn't even have lasted till half time. Welbeck looked better than Rooney at the min.

He's the same for United. Most overrated player in the league. That idiot Moyes gave him a contract that makes him virtually untouchable.

Di Maria tore a new one into Germany tonight, can't wait to see what he does with Falcao this season.

He's an assist machine provided those at the end of his balls can hit the back of the net.

Whats worse is that everyone in position to end Rooney's strangle hold keeps saying "just give him one more chance". England and Man Utd should both have stopped pandering to him at least 3 years ago and started building again without even considering him. I think both teams would be better off if that'd happened.

Just sick of hearing all the pundits say he's England best player every year it's the same and he still does nothing when wearing a England shirt stop picking him already.

It's like when peter crouch was playing all the friendlys a few years back banging in the goals come to a major tournament do we take him no course not we take Rooney and a few others who haven't scored In a while it really makes sense ahhhhhhh.

Can we just ban international footy altogether for being gash (bar the occasional World Cup which delivers once every 24 years). ****es me right off going two weeks without proper football just so ****** England can play crap against bad opposition. The fact ITV cover the games makes it all the more unbrearble.

Yup, well the thing is they rewarded his laziness and incompetence, he has a bad season or turns up to preseason fat enough to require being sent to a training camp in the states to lose weight and get fit.... give him a new contract.

When you have a player under performing and being unprofessional and reward that hugely you're asking for someone to continue as they have been. Had they put him up for sale during his first ransom situation it's quite possible no one would have bought him, no one would have offered big wages and he'd instead of being a little ***** and throwing a tantrum to get more money, found that people weren't interested and then he may have actually started training harder, playing better.

He may not have improved either but you wouldn't have given in and at worst you sell a player not performing great and free up money and squad space for someone else. But as above, Utd are scared of losing a big England name, and he plays for England because he's a big star at Utd.

Fans fault as well for constantly over rating him and pretending he's better than he is.

BBC: "Captain Rooney spares England's embarrassment".

Got to keep the commercial gravy train going so like DM he'll never be dropped, captaincy is evidence of that.

It's crazy how he media and pundits still big him up like this he did nothing all game anyone could have scored that pen and he saved the game..... What!!!!! Dm is completely right about him he doesn't even deserve to be in this team on merit it's all about the name.

Making him captain was the worst thing Roy/The FA could have done as like others have said he's practically undropable now and we'll keep shifting a better prospect in Stirling here there and everywhere just to accommodate him in his favourite position.

Maria playing wide up front?

he was playing wide right for most of the game, switched to the left for a while before going off. Basically where he played for Real for the majority of his time there. He's okay in the middle but he's much better pushed further out wide.

In terms of Rooney, while England won't drop him for commercial reasons yet, Utd have a manager who doesn't seem into the whole don't do anything to possibly hurt Rooney crap. Sentimentality and commercialism removed, LVG will do what LVG wants and spent(well committed to spend next year) a crapload on basically the best out and out striker in the world. Rooney hasn't had genuine competition for place since Utd had what, Ronaldo, Berbatov and Tevez(were they there at the same time?). RVP is competition for one particular spot but there wasn't a chance of Rooney losing his place, they played together. With Falcao it's the first time in years that there are two brilliant strikers and rooney will have to actually fight for one of two real striking positions.

It could do a lot for Rooney and as a by product improve him for England or he could be crap for Utd, Falcao/RVP start most games and all big games when fit. If he becomes deemed less good England may start to drop him.

What happens with Falcao at Utd will be interesting but I think it will spark Rooney actually trying harder. He's already said he doesn't really know what the plan is with Falcao being signed, first time he's probably even considered the idea he might be dropped since Tevez left.

DId I hear correctly that Di Maria scored 1 and assisted the other 3!?

He was good, one assist was just a freekick, decent but pretty standard. Germany played 0/4 first team defenders, something a few people seem to be not noticing though ;)

Team was Durm, Howedes, Ginter, Grosskreutz, Kroos, Kramer, Schurrle, Reus, Draxler(got injured first half), Gomez, second half which was effectively 2 all Germany had bought on Pod for Drax, then brought on Muller/Gotze.

It was a very weak team with the least effective first team players left in, Kroos and Schurrle. They were much more threatening with Muller/Gotze on, but still not good.

Either way it was potentially the best team Argentina could put out, without the team all working towards feeding Messi they played as a team rather than Team Messi. I wouldn't read a massive amount in to it. It was a good performance but he didn't dominate Germany's first team by any stretch.

I really don't understand Mert and Lahm retiring, they are 29/30 respectively, they haven't had any drop in level from their best yet while Spain's team had multiple players who had been getting worse year on year for 4 or more years. Seems incredibly odd they'd give up now when favourites for the euro's and no reason to believe either will go from great to **** in only 2 years.

Yea i thought so, pre bale wasny di maria reals right winger?

Pretty much, he played wide right multiple times last year as well, and sometimes played wide left over the past several years. In games they'd switch wings now and then as well depending on how the game was going.

Another thing to think about it, Di Maria got quite a few assists from corners/set pieces because Ronaldo is excellent in the air at set pieces. If Ronaldo wasn't a great header he'd be taking the corners. Di Maria also was helped by Real having multiple strong headers of the ball in the box, like Chelsea, so whoever is the designated setpiece(that can't be directly shot from or Ronnie would take it) and corner taker gets a decent bump in assist stats.

Mata's assist rate at Chelsea was much higher than at Utd, because Utd aren't overly strong from corners and the like, they have no killer header, Rooney isn't remotely close to the likes of Ronaldo. Vidic wasn't terrible but he's gone, Evra wasn't great in the air just had good timing and he wasn't consistently scoring just the odd season he got a few goals like that.

But Falcao will be a huge threat from set pieces, though again it's easier when a team has 2-4 really strong players because they become harder to mark. Someone like Falcao at set pieces can be scoring goals you wouldn't expect Rooney or RVP to score from consistently, it will help Di Maria or Mata in terms of set pieces and being more effective.

Going from say Jones or Smalling, to them and Falcao can make the world of difference. That extra player makes the world of difference.

There were 4-5 games last year where he came off the bench and Arsenal went from useless to scoring at set pieces. I think he scored one and Mert scored 2 or 3. Because having that second guy in the box means the defence has more dangers to mark, leaves more space. There was an instance and massive difference in how threatening we were and Arsenal win loads of corners in general and quite a lot of freekicks but generally don't look threatening, certainly not in the way Chelsea/Real do.

Falcao combining with Di Maria/Mata freekicks will be a huge advantage/improvement for Utd this year.

Woke up to see the result this morning and didn't even need to read any of the articles to tell this game was a snooze fest.

I could have pretty much predicted everything that happened.

- England look shaky in defense when under pressure.
- Midfield looked ordinary and don't really do anything.
- Rooney is massively underwhelming.

This honestly is the one of the worst England squads I've ever seen. For the first time in 26 years I have virtually zero interest in the internationals.
