2018 was even worse. Apparently we had a "good tournament" and he'd done an amazing job, yet no team lost more matches than us in that tourney (we lost more than we won). Literally the only half-decent team we beat over 90/120mins were Sweden and Tunisia, Panama were pushovers and then our other win against Columbia was on pens. This is the thing I am still to understand about why people think Southgate is good.
The only time we need remotely well was with a VERY lucky selection of teams in Euro 2020 and then when we came up against a genuinely decent team we lost.
It seems to me that anyone would have done as well as Southgate. I cannot see what he actually does.
Southgate lost 3 times as many tournament matches at WC2018 alone as Capello did in his entire England career.
I actually don't have a huge issue with Southgate, but his 'success' at tournaments has been a bit overblown, there aren't that many top tier sides that he's beaten in tourneys.
