UEFA Europa League Final Villarreal v Man Utd ** spoilers ** [Wednesday 26th May 2021]

Got the impression that Zidane was a club/footballing legend and did a great job of motivating the RM players but the squad they had during his CL purple period was insane. Some of the best players of the last 20 years in that squad.

Top tier:
Varane
Kroos
Ronaldo
Ramos
Bale
Benzema
Pepe
Marcelo
Modric
Casillas

Very good/game changing subs:
Casemiro
Isco
Navas
Rodriguez
Morata

Its why its so hard to judge managers at the top level (apart from Ole :p). Pep is unquestionably a top manager but he has never taken anything but the best team in the league and tinkered with them. City were the best team in the league when he took over and they still are. Same at Bayern. At Barca he took over potentially one of the best teams of all time that had one of the strongest cohesive set of players who all grew from the same tree at La Masia.

I would say that Klopp is probably the manager that has demonstrated the greatest ability to add value to a set of players and get the most from all of them. Pep just buys and buys until he has what he wants.

That's tough on Rashford. A lot of us Reds are disappointed today, but he's a great lad doing some great work.

Obviously not on the pitch though because according to most match reviews he's almost universally received the lowest performance rating of any player. Most of the stories today should be about how he had a disappointing game and needs to improve but they aren't. He's the new Rooney, immune to criticism by the media class.

Why would the media commit suicide and beat him whilst he's already down? He missed a sitter yes but he wasn't the only one to have a **** performance, wasn't even the worst player on the pitch.

The fact that a footballer has to deal with so much racist abuse just shows how far we still have to go. All that's happened is, it's moved from being flung at them in person (although this still happened to Rio on the weekend), to being flung at them behind a keyboard and it's far more difficult to catch them!

Rooney got absolutely hammered throughout his years by some of the papers!

Does that prove that arsenal's main issue is not the managers but the players?

2 years ago, Arsenal never turned up for a cup final with a squad far better than villareal..

It was also against a Chelsea side that were ruthless and an Eden Hazard who had his best season as far as goals and assists for the club IIRC. United not turning up yesterday was as much of a factor as Villareal playing for the smash and grab most of the night, and it’s also it’s not like he’s set La Liga on fire on his return - they finished 5th last season and 7th this year + got knocked out of the Copa Del Rey in the quarters twice in a row - his niche just seems to just be getting a Europa League run going with mid-table Spanish sides that aren’t soulless corporate juggernauts.

They never gave Unai a chance that's why. He is obviously a good manager but Arsenal's squad is terrible. They have the same attitude as United thinking they are entitled to a top 4 place. Now they have a terrible manager and an even worse squad.

What Ole needs is an earpiece with Sir Alex on the other end. I can not envisage Sir Alex...
  1. Not making a change within the 90mins.
As many have noted Rashford was having a terrible match and it was clear to most football fans that he should have been subbed.
  2. Not having players on the bench that he felt could make a difference.
Sir Alex seemed to always have somebody on the bench that he thought could get him a goal in the last 20mins when legs had tired. Looking at the bench I could only see Mata as somebody that's cute and classy enough to get a late goal but maybe Ole thinks he doesn't have the legs anymore...
  3. Not being savvy enough to put his best penalty stopper in goal for the penalties.
I was at the World Cup in 2014 in Brazil when van Gaal swapped in Krull for Cillessen in the penalties and Krull's penalty saving record was no way as good as Henderson's. I don't think many would have criticised Ole if he had done that.
Though I would not put all the blame on Ole. Man Utd's more influential players like Fernandes and Pogba in particular just had very poor games and I've noticed recently that generally if Fernandes has an off day then Man Utd have an off day.

Poor game but glad Villareal won though and highlights why closed shop super leagues would be bad for football as teams like this wouldn't even get a shot to knock out the big boys and claim European glory.

Just a shame all the great work is off the pitch.
But I can’t condone any of the behaviour he has to put up with at all though, disgusting. I can’t fathom taking the time or coming up with what they have to put up with from the worlds cretins in their inboxes and profiles.
I’d just not use social media if it was me, but that’s defeating the object I guess.

I think Rashford is currently carrying two major injuries , certainly his ankle and I believe he has another one as well. Without him this season we wouldnt have made top 4 (2nd highest goal scorer and assister across all comps - only behind Bruno on both stats ) .

I would have loved for him to have had the operation(s) months ago - but that was never going to happen.

He wasnt great - but then who was really? I dont know why people are concentrating on MR, Pogba was pretty invisible , Bruno was well marshalled out of the game, Shaw was pretty decent and McTominay was decent in stretches. but very few if any had a good game all the way through , and there was basicaly no one on the bench that would have made any difference at all (Fred is as likely to concede a free kick on the edge of the penalty area as do something worthwhile, Mata is WAY too slow and hasnt been good for Utd for years, and majority of the others were inexperienced).

I think you may find they are contractually meant to be on social media - part of their club contract will revolve around image rights which is (not only) to do with twitter etc.

This is down to a few things - poor summer 12 months ago (not helped by spending small fortunes on two players that immediately went back out on loan, they look decent prospects but we still need players to make an immediate impression), Pogba has been brilliant in individual games but over a run of games he will "throw " in some pretty awful ones as well, and he is one of the central creators, and when its just down to any one player they are easily marked out of a game, and then it comes back to terrible investment under Jose / LvG.

VdBeek is also still a mystery - definitely a very good player, not sure if he is suited to Utd though, he has some VERY good moments but truelly awful ones too , but maybe he might be a Fred (who's first season in England was pretty dire as well, and after a good preseason had a decent 2nd season) but who knows
