Behind you... Naked!
Im a little confused as to this.

I have a few Mobos that have the new UEFI ( or whatever it is ) option to boot with.

These Mobos also have a Windows 8 option to boot.

Ok, thats fine, however, whenever I chose the Windows 8 , or that EUFI option, I get thrown into a Command line ?

Now, I have not really put too much thought into this, until a few days ago.

I bought a 3TB drive a while back. Dont know why, but I did. Its been dumped in the drawer and I found it and thought sod it, I will use it.

Now, I thought ok, I will put it into the I7 and uise the I7 as a server again, but it didnt seem to like it? - The BIOS saw it as a 3TB for sure, but then when I went to create partitions, I saw a few things I didnt like.

I know Win8 does a 350MB system partition, thats fine, it did that
I wanted to have a 64GB Partition for C: and the rest of it... 2.9TB or so, for D:, and simply I wioll share the entire of D: with my entire Network, nice and easy, however, it made my 64GB, but then it showed up that there was 2 empty unallocated chunks... On was clearly going to the 2TB marker, and a second one ,showing 700 and something GB after that?

Ok, not a biggie, I clearly saw that the Mobo simply didnt like Drives over 2TB, and so thats fine.

My Gigabyte 970 and 990 Mobos both had a 3TB+ label on them, so lets play with that instead.

I have not tried the 970, thats down here with me and its my MediaPC but the 990 is upstairs and thats just as well being a server. Its my old AMD Bulldozer.

That one does the very same thing?

So, I have been piddling about in the BIOS with this EUFI thingy in the hope that I get something or something happens, or... well, anything really, but its simply not doing a thing?

I am no longer able to concentrate on anything much, I find things difficult towork out these days ( not that I was any better before ) but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to do, to get a PC to boot up using a 3TB Drive. I dont want windows to be a whole 3TB, I only need it to be 64GB and the rest as a single partition.

Is it that Windows 8 option, or that UEFI or what?

The Boards that I have, that I want to use are the Gigabyte ones. The rest I am using.

Gigabyte 970A-DS3
Gigabyte 990A-UD3

The old I7 is a P55-USB3 and I will happily use that, as it was my first option

As a bit of fun, I knocked up a cheap MediaPC the other month and used a Foxconn MCP-61 Mobo ( I just want to play with the AMD APUs for a giggle ) and so, I could use that I suppose - Thats another Mobo that I have failed completely to get running with the Windows 8 / UEFI mode.

Anyway, I am utterly mental, I am probably talking rubbish, and I dont have a clue yet what this EUEIFUFIEUI mode actually is ( Im about to google ) but if anyone can help me, please do.

Thanks.

you have to format the 3tb and create a gpt partition for it to see the whole 3tb,is that what you mean?

then you can partition it off to what sizes you need ect, that win8 option in the bios is probably for fast boot which doesn't work on some boards

GPT.
Yes, I read that when doing a search. What I have done, is chucked it into a PC and sure enough, that worked.

So, an option, is to boot off one HD and do it THAT way.

However...

This wont work if I want to use that oone drive and have 1 partition to boot onto and the rest as a single 2.9TB Partition will it?

Because whatever I do, I can only actually access the first 2TB of the disk... It sees the rest but wont use it.

Not when I am trying to install Windows anyway.

I suppose I could simply install Windows and then use a Disk Manager to see if I can then use the rest while in Windows ?

If that fails, then I have a spare SSD ready to plop windows on.

Well, that was funky!

I just been piddling about on the gigabyte 970 Mobo and then the 990.

Both let me boot and install just fine to the 3TB

However... And I have seen this before, but was able to get around it, but... In Windows 7, It wants me to make a 100MB system partition, and in Windows 8, that system partition is a 350MB one yes?

Well, now, I get a Recovery, a system, a MBT ( I think it was? ) and then mine.

4 Smegging partitions?

I could I suppose ignore it, and I did, but it was irritating me.

I simply failed to get rid of it

I did the very same on the 990 Board and again, I got the 4 partitions no matter what!

I gave up, and the drive is now back on the 970 cos thats my current Media Player and thats also going to be playing games etc for the kids.

Ok, well on to the issues I had previously...

I have found, that this board has EUFI , LEGACY, or BOTH!

I have now found out why I have been completely unable to install Windows onto my PCs in the past.

I use SSDs for C: and standard HDs for the Data.

When I use EUFI Mode, none of the Boards I have, can see the SSD drives.
On that 970 Board, I have had to select BOTH Legacy and EUFI in order to see an SSD and the 3TB

This also answers my thoughts on why the DVD is seen in 2 different ways - It can treat it as both UEFI and NON-UEFI - I had wondered why it showed up as 2 drives?

Anyway, I backed off the Legacy, and I went purely with UEFI and sure enough, a 3TB and one DVD now shows up and I throw Windows 8 onto it, but still there is that 4 partition thing... Well, 5 now actually because I needed a 64GB for Windows and the entire rest for the Data etc

Does this kind of drive HAVE to have those extra partitions ?

Oh, and one other error I made... The 970 Mobo does not have UEFI but it does have EFI PLUS a Windows 8 option... So clearly they are different... I was confused there.

I need to get my FoxConn back from next door to piddle about with that BIOS becausde that one was absolutely crazy hard to fiddle with.

At least the Gigabyte boards are easier then I thought.

Hmmm... I find that quite annoying.

However, Windows 7 has gone on with just its own little 100MB System Partition and thats cool.

Not done owt with it, because after all this messing about, I have decided to use an SSD anyway.

Just to make things cleaner all round.

I will feel better that way.
