UGREEN NASync Series - Owners Thread

Linux is Linux really. I didn’t need a whole setup as I was migrating from a VM I was passing through a bunch of disks to, to a standalone box so I was already running it pretty bare.

I use BTRFS as a file system on the drives and I’m using mergerfs to balance stuff between the main drives as it’s mainly media.

I did drop a pair of 2gb nvmes in for things like data and my photo library.
No gotchas with the Linux install, drivers all happy? Would not touch this with a barge pole with a Shenzen OS, but if it’s plain sailing on Linux I may finally upgrade my old DS214

Those of you running a Plex server on your NAS, how are you running it? I was going to run it via Docker but then read that you can actually install it natively using the Debian install package which is what I've done and it works great.

Only thing is, I have a DXP2800 which has 32GB of MMC storage for the OS and Plex will have installed on there so that's also where all the cache files, images etc will go. It shouldn't be a big issue and indeed I appear to still have plenty of space on there, but it's something to be aware of.

I went for the 4800 - it is just running Nginx Proxy Manager, AdGuard Home, Plex and a file server. The main grunt is my Geekom IT13 which runs all my dockers.
I am using JPOD - 2 x 4TB Iron Wolf, 1 x 4TB Iron Wolf Pro and 1 x 3TB Toshiba N300. I am backing up to an 8TB Seagate FireCuda external drive for important stuff - and also to a Hetzner 5TB SMB Storage Box.

Despite it being shipped last Friday my 4800 plus has still not arrived. Evri have defecated in the bed. Still gives me some time to decide on HDDs I guess and can start on ripping the Blu-ray collection.

noctua fan arriving tomorrow and i fitted the wee isolation foot pads that seem to make bit of a difference - will stick the remaining 4 on my other NAS to see if it helps with it too!

Set of 8 AudioSerenity ISO-9H-23 Speaker Isolation Pads

How did you find the pads in the end?

they have made a bit of an improvement. I have combined them with some repurposed dense foam pads from a washing machine purchase so wood floor, dense foam pad, isolation footpads and the noise is much ameliorated compared to before. Think i will have a look at the drive bay isolater widget things to see if thast improves noise further....

on a side note plenty of the mariushosting guides for installing containers on synology machines work with the dx4800 too :)

Thanks. Ordered some though more for my new HTPC. Once I get tweaking my Unifi network and HTPC out of the way, I can move my attention back to the DX4800+. I was checking temps on my network gear this morning and noticed hot air coming out of the front of the 4800+, something I did not notice with the stock fan. But comments online suggest it draws cool air from the back and blows across the drives out of the front, two of the HDDs are at 50C. When installing the Noctua, pretty sure I installed with the arrows in the same direction as the stock. How are your temps/air going from back to front?

I bought the 6 bay 6800 model about a month ago. I fitted a spare 256Gb SSD into one of the slots to install any apps so it runs silently when I’m not transferring data to/from the HDDs.

I’ve currently got 4x 16Tb drives in RAID 5, and 2 x 6Tb in RAID 1. I was hoping I could change raid 5 to raid 10 without rebuilding but sadly not.

I added a 16Gb DIMM bought for £20 from marketplace just to give it a bit more headroom should I decide to run more stuff in the future.

So far I’ve put Velcro squares in the drive trays to help cutdown the vibration as well as sitting it one some 40mm dense foam which has made it inaudible from downstairs now.

Today I configured iscsi and connected to it from my windows 11 desktop. Quite painless to configure and peak performance is better, but very variable when writing and a bit more consistent when reading.

I’m not sure about using SSDs for read/write cache and whether it would work with the iscsi target, as it’s not visible using the Files app.

Yeah, the hardware is pretty well supported in kernel, no out of kernel drivers required!
