UK court to unmask 'file-sharers'

XP Home OEM is £60.. anyone who bought XP when it came out has had over four years of free updates, which will continue for several more years yet. Seems a good deal to me actually :) Office is a lot pricier, I agree, but most home users can make do with something like MS Works which you can buy new for a few quid on auction sites.

As someone who works at a ISP I am not surprised - we are daily suspending users who are sharing illegal software and its the large corporations that supply us with the info and evidence that we base these suspensions on.

People who use P2P or otherwise upload illegal software are down right stupid or ignorant of the way the internet works to such an extent that they deserve to be caught.

So I assume that if someone had been caught by an Internet antipiracy agency their accounts would have been suspended automatically?

Doubt it, a friend of mine has recieved a few emails from various Anti Piracy groups and i'm guessing his ISP has been told, he hasn't been suspended.

I do however think that if software wasn't so expensive, people would be more disposed towards purchasing it legitimately.

I dont condone piracy but this is why i beleive how much is office that ridiculous like £200 if things were cheaper like somone said above it may not happen.
Not true at all. The people that pirate will continue to do so no matter what the price is. These are the same people that use cracks for £5 shareware proggies and steal a £7 music CD. Thieves are thieves and will always be so. The problem is, because of them, the software will always cost the legitimate buyer more. :(

They are going for big distributor so people who are jus downloadin off things like songs an stuff wont get done....yet. Once they have started they'll continue on and then down to the less serious downloaders. Still a bit of time to go before they do it.

Depends on what the ISPs Abuse policy is. However any ISP that doesnt take abuse seriously is running a VERY big risk of having a major law suite on their hands as it becomes THEIR fault that people are illegally downloading warez not the customers... so pretty much any UK ISP is going to take abuse reports to heart.

Our policy is 3 suspensions and your account is closed.

Also a worthy reminder is that its the ACCOUNT HOLDERS responsibility for what goes on with their internet connection.

If you dont want you connection used for illegal activities do not let them use it. Even if you have an unsecured wireless connection and something like child porn was downloaded using it... its YOUR fault for not securing it.

I do get to see some fascinating stuff at work such as the police requests to release data (great fun telling them no when they dont provide the necessary data release forms :p) but generally the Police only do this for things such as Terrorist sites etc (which we have had a few of).

One of my favourites was a site setup on one of our hosting servers proclaiming to be an "Internet Bank - We have been running an internet bank since 1987, years of experiance.... ".

Hey, cool as long as you just download it's ok, so if everyone is just downloading, there will be no court cases :D

Oh, wait...

Ewwwwww BT!

Anyway, a friend of mine's kids are at college and according to him, most people have pirated programs, like MS Office and so on.

That wouldn't supprise me. How is a student expected to stump up £400+ on a program package only to stump up another £300-£400 a few years down the line when his current package is 'obsolete'?

Microsoft have got semi-wise to that, our uni has an Acaemic MSDN thing, we get things like XP Pro, Visual Studio etc free. No office though. They know for a fact that 0.001% of students will buy the software :p.
