£18 pound a day for your services ?

And people are saying that "the UK is the worst place to live"

really?

He works/lives in Poland, they get paid pennies there.

I've been to Poland a few times on holiday, we went out for a 3 course meal and for 11 of us, drinks included it was £60. My mum tried to tip the waiter £5 and he refused to take it

What's wrong with £18?

You only see £18 as a bad thing because it'd barely buy you a few days food in the UK.

The same waiter may be paid £50 a day in the UK and actually be worse off.

Indeed, £18 could be loads of money there depending on the cost of living.

Realise it's only 10 countries and uses a fairly random set of criteria for quality of life,
look at who's in 9th,
search for the thread(s) about how awesome the quality of life in Sweden is,
discount survey entirely

God this thread is a worry. Do people genuinely think so little about something that the first thing that pops into their head goes down on paper.

"Can't be that bad otherwise no one would come over here"

"You can't include weather in a survey about a countries merits"

"£18 a day for working in a cafe, that must be a rubbish country"

"I can't listen to a survey that places the cost of alcohol and cigarettes as an indicator of quality"

Think about what people want from a country, think about the culture surrounding it and how they like to live. Sunshine makes people happier, smoking and drinking are enjoyed almost universally across Europe, we have a very cosy social security system for asylum seekers. Low wages in european countries reflect the wealth of that country. £18 a day in thailand would be fantastic for most. £18 a day in poland is alright so why not work in the UK for £50 a day and save for when you go home.

The UK is unsurprisingly bottom of this list and you can pick as many holes as you like in it but there has been plenty of research over the last few years about happiness quotients and we do not do well.

what a load of rubbish

only 10 countries out of 50 included
we came 9th not 10th out of those

9th out of 50 is good! :)

france (top) for example has lower take home income after tax and some things are cheaper by a small amount, doesnt that equal pretty much the same cost of living then? plus they have longer working hours

It might be expensive to live here and we may be governed by baboons with crazy socialist views BUT as I'm sat here on my comfy chair, in my air conditioned office, eating a co-op 'Truly Irresistible' triple chocolate cookie and drinking this lovely cup of tea made with fresh, running water I can't help but think about these people:

My uncle lives over there, he built a 6 bedroom house from nothing and it only cost him £30,000. Polish labour is cheap. My cousin works 9-5 as a waiter and gets £18 a day

Wouldn't want to live in that house though - my (very limited) experience with Polish-built/"fixed" houses is that it generally falls apart very quickly :p
