I wonder if there is a psychological argument for standing up to putin sooner rather than later.

We are currently backing him into a corner gently. -slowly eating away at what he can hope to be left with after the dust settles. Is it possible that by the time we are willing to stand up to him and he is faced with the possibility of losing "everything" that such a prospect will have little deterrent effect because he will already be most of the way there and had time to adjust his expectations down incrementally....gently?

Would it not be better to stand up to him when he has more to lose?

Exactly.

Nuke em all and let God sort them out.

Yeah! Bring on the Nukes! Britain can take it! Right guys?

....Riiiiiight?
Russia has said phase one is complete and they are now concentrating on operations in the East of Ukraine.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-europe-60856533

Thats what I thought it looks like they're concentrating on the east to create a land corridor between Crimea and Luhansk/Donbas if and when they decide to call a ceasefire they'll want to make sure thats secured and Mariupal is the one obstacle in their way hence it being pummeled to a pile of rubble they don't care if its annihilated so long as they get their corridor. They seem to have eased up on Kyiv for example theres even talk of ukranian forces retaking towns on the outskirts. They seem more determined to take Kharkiv and have been bombing that heavily too maybe because its mainly russian speakers and in the warped alternative universe of Putins worldview they're "liberating" the population by... bombing the place to bits and killing thousands (those who resist were probably "traitors"anyway)

The question mark remains over what they'll decide to do after establishing their corridor will they move on to Odessa? Its regarded as the jewel of the black sea founded by Catherine the Great name checked by Putin recently so it could be he's reluctant to reduce the place to rubble the same could apply to Kyiv he has some mystical idea its the cultural centre of the slavs being one of the if not the first city to be founded or to become important so it could be he's reluctant to flatten that as well hes concentrated on specific targets like airports control centres and fuel dumps rather than relentless shelling of the cultural centre etc.

If if was to put any money on it I'd say when ceasefire is called theres rumours that the 9th of May is the enddate thats been given to Russian commanders - they'd withdraw to the north and east and illegally occupy. Or at least until the next time when he/they've restocked and regrouped and return for more taking ukraine by chunks and thats when the west/nato will have to decide whether to include it in the EU/NATO to prevent further attacks. But who knows eh.

Another general down:

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/wor...aine-airstrike-kyiv-moscow-putin-b990517.html
Lieutenant General Yakov Rezantsev, 48, was killed in a strike by the Ukrainian armed forces, they say.

He was Commander of the 49th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District.

The Russian side has not so far confirmed the death.

Oleksiy Arestovych, adviser to the head of the President’s Office, said: “Over the past day, our troops - as we previously reported and we can now say for sure - killed the commander of the 49th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District of Russia, Lieutenant General Yakov Vladimirovich Rezantsev.

The de-nazification of a country with a Jewish leader.

I'm sure you mean it in a sarcastic way but you really need to dig deeper to understand motives.

As a brief history Zelensky was bankrolled by Kolomoisky - a Ukrainian oligarch that was heavily punished by Poroshenko, the previous chocolate magnate oligarch who was elected president in 2014. Kolomoisky owned PrivatBank, which was nationalised and Kolomoisky got zilch.

Kolomoisky is actually Jewish yet bankrolled the infamous paramilitary Azov battalion, back then it was 100% neo-nazi. So you see the world may not be as black and white because to a normal person this sounds like absolute nonsense for a jewish person to facilitate an existence of illegal neo-nazi paramilitary, yet it happened.

For the record Azov battalion was slowly cleaned up after 2015 and incorporated into Ukrainian army. The radical element was slowly removed and got even better when Zelenksy was elected as the president and now apparently only 30% of Azov is neo-nazi.

As for de-nazification, I believe Russia's foreign minister or somebody else said what it means - revocation of anti-russian laws (you'd need to google it, there are a lot of issues there, Hungary was also very unhappy with new laws that inhibit minority rights) and dissolve far right nationalist battalions.

I’m starting to become more nervous about the US escalating things instead of Russia now. They seem to be doing a lot of poking at the moment and making rather worrying moves in to what’s being said and their military movements

Putin only understands force and he needs to be fully aware there will be overwhelming force. You never want to enter a fair fight.

Ruble rising in strength. Whats Going on? Sanctions not working?

Capital controls introduced. Rouble rate is no longer a function of free supply and demand dynamic. Demand was reduced due to capital controls, supply increased due to government decree to sell 80% of foreign currency proceeds.

If you want to look at effects of sanctions then look at GDP projections, last time I heard it is around -10 to -15% for the year.

Houthi rebels in Yemen have blown up an Aramco oil refinery facility in Saudi Arabia. This is likely to cut production and push global oil prices higher. Good news for Russia.

Likely means the US will provide more support to Saudi Arabia however to end the Houthi rebellion for good.
