No backplate, the more expensive Aorus and MSI Gaming have backplates.

Does it matter whether there is a backplate or is it purely aesthetic? I know gigabyte have done away with the copper on the backplates of the new rtx series so that was obviously marketing fluff.

I really like having a backplate for the more premium looks and cleaning.

But I'm not convinced they are needed.

A backplate isn't needed, but you can get third party ones easy enough if you want for the aesthetic. I've found www.coldzero.eu to have some good options in the past.

Aesthetic, some of them increase card rigidity which can be useful if you're worried about sag, but overall it's just for looks (most actually impede cooling).

When not on offer that card is nearly £700 , how much more expensive does it have to be for a backplate ?, I have a £400 1070 I keep as a spare card thats got a backplate, think I'll leave it .

I thought prices were not going to drop any further as stocks of 1080ti were almost gone? I'd have bought this if i'd have known that wasn't true, but instead ended up getting a 1070ti.
