Hi,
I have to make a decision pretty soon about what i want to do with my life and i have two choices. I can either go to uni and do a degree, or train as a joiner/spark. There is a third option and i could do a part time degree by distance, but to do this would take a long time, and would really need to be working. Have you had to make a decision like this? What did you do?

I like working with my hands, and also I am fairly clever. I'm stuck. What to do, what to do....:confused:

Bombshell of a first post.

I know sparks who get plenty of money, I've done 4 years at uni and am £15000 in debt :p

Yeah. If a degree doesn't help your career choice (like IT) its a waste of time.

In many careers though the 3 years getting experience are far more use that a degree, especially in IT as Gilly said

Ah fair enough. I just thought having a degree would be useful in later life if the OP ever wanted to do anything other than being a sparky. Probably not likely but you never know.

You don't have to go to University in the pursuit of a job - but rather in the pursuit of wisdom and life. But that's entirely up to you.

Uni is also great fun.

Worst case scenario: You go to Uni, and decide to get a job where a degree means nothing and experience is everything. So what? You are only 3 years behind and youve got a very long life. Plus youve got the option in the future.

I went to university, ended up being a big mistake - however I see it the same as Fox above. It's the best time in your life to be making a mistake (cheapest ride you'll get :p) so it won't be that bad if you don't use it.

claimed! - and welcome

i think it would be a good move training as a sparky, the work will always be there, and the money is usually good.

but at the end of the day its got to be something you enjoy, although saying that you can always take another career path if this one doesnt work out

My brother didn't go to university. He's a year older than me and earning three to four times the amount I am. He's really really happy.

I went to university and had the best time I will ever have in my life. I earn a decent wage and am currently living in a different country and travelling. I am also extremely happy.

If you have an intelligent head on your shoulders, both options will probably lead to good things. I'd obviously recommend going to university - it's an incredible experience. On the other hand, my bro has no regrets about not going.

put it like this - my dad is a mechanic and has for 25 years, never went to university as went for the experience. is now being told he isnt able to get jobs because he has no qualifications even though he has 25 years experience.

get the qualifications and then get the job or do an apprenticeship or do the degree and get a part time job as to your career.

it may take 3 years, it may get you into debt (if you dont manage your money correctly)

but it is to go on yoru cv and a major part at what employers look for.

if you can get sponsored by a company to do an apprenticeship id do it. allot of them will even pay or help pay for you to do part time degree sorta thing too .

but DO NOT go to a training centre that "promises" that youl get a sponsorship before you leave . its very unlikely you will in mine and mates experiences

also you say your clever..... i thought i was clever and am struggling like mad on my mech engineering course :(

hard decision really

Try university for a year. If you don't like it then drop out. You'll have "wasted" at most 1 year of your life, and will be £3k in debt but over a lifetime that's nothing. You can get a job at any point in your (adult) life, but you won't get the same sort of experience of university in later life as you would now.

a degree wouldn't help much 25 years into your career

but you then have one year of your life to account for, admit you dropped out of Uni after a year and you are labelled a failure/quitter
