Ultra-wide angle lens for Canon

Hi guys, looking for some advice on an ultra-wide angle lens for my Canon 700D. I'm just a beginner so I don't really have a particular style, but I'm interested in doing more landscape/architecture shots.

I've currently got an 18-135 STM kit lens which I think is great, and a nifty fifty (that's the law, right?!). I've done some landscape shots with the kit lens and have been fairly happy with the results, but I like the perspective that the wider lenses can give.

So the main question... is there anything better than the canon 10-22 on a crop frame? Some thoughts from people that have owned one would be great. I noticed that it doesn't have IS so what's the sharpness like? What's it like when shooting handheld? With landscapes I'll be using a tripod but just wondered if you can get away without one when on a random walk about town, etc?

Any other advice would be great!

Sigma 10-20 is absolutely fine on a crop body. We've had two for as many years and they're great, and much cheaper than the Canon. Some examples to hand:

If you're shooting landscapes then you'll most likely want a high f-stop anyway so sharpness is fine and no-IS isn't an issue.

If you ever upgrade to a full-frame then it has a natural vignette on every focal range with ~16mm being the least obvious so it has no real advantage over a crop.

Tokina 11-16mm - I have one and it's fantastic.

You don't get the range of some of the others, but it's regarded as the best for image quality when going this wide.

That or the Canon 10-20 (iirc), they're close contenders!

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
russ, that sigma looks good - love the 3rd pic!

I think I'd probably prefer something with a bit more range than the 11-16 although that does seem to get some really good reviews.

I had a long thread on here with canon 10-22 vs tokina 11 - 16

Its a tough one
More aperture vs more range is what it comes down to.
I went with canon in the end
Price wasn't an issue they are so close

If you are on a tripod the extra aperture won't matter in most situations
That said I was at a museum other day and a lot of the shots Could have done with extra light
But there was also plenty of shots I would have had to change lenses for with a 16mm limit

I think I made the right choice, think it depends if you are the sort to go and do a specific type of shooting in a day.. Ie you are going to do just uwa, or you go out with your camera just looking for interesting pictures.. Ie a range of focal lengths

I will have a look at my shots from the day and see how many I was over 16mm

I also got told the sigma isn't as good at 8mm

My first post here!

I am no expert but I will also vouch for the Sigma 10-20mm. It was the first lens that I bought after using the kit lens on my Nikon. I love it.

That's really useful, thanks - al4x I'll have a read through your thread as well. At the moment it's looking like it's between the sigma 10-20 and the canon 10-22 as they have a bit more of a range that I was looking for. The sigma looks like it's really good value for money. Are there any issues with build quality with either of these?

I'm pretty much in the same boat, looking for a wide angle to use on my 600d. For me it's between the canon 10-20mm and the tokina 11-16mm, both seem to get great reviews and there's a newer version of the tokina as well, but it does put it slightly more expensive than the canon.

Going by the shots in the this thread you won't go wrong with any of the suggestions.

thats what was said to me basically

thye ideal lens would have the range of the canon and aperture of the tok, i got my canon from JL and it was cheaper than the tok at the time, i def wouldnt want less aperture than the canon has

Interesting. There's also a version of the sigma which has f3.5 rather than f4-5.6. My main concern with the sigma is that there's a lot of reviews around of people getting bad copies - I know you can replace them but I could do without the hassle, plus being a relative novice I wouldn't be confident at diagnosing many optical abnormalities!

I can afford the canon so the price isn't really an issue if it's going to be the best overall package.

Whilst the Sigma is only £136 less than the Canon, that's still half of a Canon 50mm 1.4. Those two plus a variable such as a 24-70mm are all I ever use apart from more specialist occasions.

price is so close to the best, at that sort of money it isnt a worry imo

had a look at the sigma myself after this thread and didnt realise there was 2 versions

Oh of course. 10-20mm, 50mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm and 100mm Macro are pretty much our set :p

macro 100mm L IS - love what i can get from this lens
50mm 1.8 - dirt cheap, not my area tbh, only bought to fill the gap
10-22mm UWA - do love the possibilities this lens gives
something 100-200 range
something at 400mm range

cant think of anything else exept mpe 65mm 5x macro :o
