OK I cant make my mind up.

Im stuck on going ultra wide or two monitors... I will be gaming (i only really play new ish games) PUBG, GTA5, Arma2, Squad etc. BUT i will be working all day on this monitor too as i work from home. opening 2 documents at a time.

I have some questions for widescreen gamers if gaming in a standard aspect ratio can you effectively split the monitor into two without playing the game in windowed mode? How do you get around this if you want "dual monitor"

How do you find support for games in widescreen? Do most games now support this? do you just get more FOV?

Ultimately is this going to become the "choice of gamers in the future" or is this going to be a forever not 100% supported product?

what is peoples preferences that have used both? i have always had two monitors and obviously working on one large with maybe a drawing and excel spreadsheet open is easy but its the gaming im thinking of.

Must haves are 1440p (minimum) 120hz+ G-sync preferable. It will be driven by a 980ti for now but when next gen comes out it will be driven by the 1180ti or what ever it will be called.

Sorry for the huge list of questions but dropping a grand on a monitor i want to make sure.

I've never understood dual monitor gaming, 3 monitors yeah but not 2, Where does the crosshair go?

We're in the process of getting new 4k ultrawides and faster hertz but we're not quite at the 120+ level with 3440x1440 maybe at some point this year though.

16:9 is pretty wide tbh, if you go big enough. Could have gone UW, but not 144hz. Lots more pixels too so that means a faster more expensive GPU.

I think UW will be a niche product

i'm not a huge gamer, but the ones i have tested on UW lately have performed perfectly

I don't think UW are ever going to be a mainstream thing though... they're great for media editing, photo and video editing software really takes advantage of the extra screen real estate... and for watching movies they're truly breathtaking lol

if you can sacrifice the desk space, UW's are really worth it in my opinion if you're going to take advantage of them... if not, a dual monitor setup on a VESA mount can be a lot easier to work with if you're working on different windows / programs and want to snap them around easily and keep different monitors for different tasks... just depends on your workflow and how you do things

and for watching movies they're truly breathtaking lol

PC monitors are still too small for movies- also that's why have a Home Theatre elseware, with a plasma. Also the two different display types- oled/plasma great for films, not great for desktop. LCD monitors great for PC's not great for movies.

It would be great if UW's oled/plasma existed.

i've got a decent sized TV and bluray elsewhere... but there is just something about the UW ratio for movies that is far more immersive than the standard 16:9 set

showing 'desolation of smaug' here for an example

`16:9 TV's are awesome at a decent size... but UW's are just something else entirely for the proper cinematic feel

yeah I'm aware 2:35 movies will use 100% of the screen. Problem is of course with 4:3 and 16:9 material.

Plus you can't buy UW 50"+

LCD still have crap quality, in blacks mainly.

Biggest UW is 38", that is pretty small. And don't have any TV features, like tuners, decent scalers, smart functions etc.

yeah they're not perfect, don't get me wrong... there's a lot of niggly things i'd change with them

but i bought it mainly for workflow and media editing... the cinema style movie enjoyment was just a huge bonus lol

I have the Aoc Agon 35" UW plenty of real estate for desktop work on a 3440 X 1440. Most games support the UW ratio and if not the wide screen gaming forum usually has a work around.

Yes a great deal more FOV take a look at the UW screenshots over in the pc games forum.

I currently run mine on a 1080 and easily achieve 100fps on most games (it's 100hz g-sync) on max settings it's stunning and anyone that's been over to see it has wanted an UW.

I haven't tried to play any games in a side by side mode however 2 documents side by side works very well easily snapped to with Windows key and arrows. Excel documents are fantastic to work with also.

I have 2 monitors in work and tbh I would happily give them up for my UW.

Can you not retain the monitors you have and also add in an UW?

Unfortunately do not have enough desk real estate for that. Ok now I’m tempted by UW, question pubg only goes from 90 degrees fov to 102 or somthing. Does that mean I loose height?

I haven't got PUBG as I don't have the time to put in to it to enjoy it, however I recently picked up wolfenstein 2 and that is rendered UW with no loss height wise also from what I can tell the cut scenes are also in UW format. I have also got doom and ACO again both perfect in UW.

Well that's why it's called ultra wide, use monitor size comparison. Decide what physical size in screen height you want, and look at ppi. 29" 1080p UW is good, and 34" 1440p is good. But I wouldn't go for a 34" 1080p.

That's why I went for a 27" 16:9, because a 24 16:9 is tiny (vertically) compared to a 24" 16:10.

The bare minimum i could live with is 34" UW ideally 40" UW but i cant see anything around that sort of size. Would really like something the size of a 27" monitor vertically.... one can dream

Dell do a 38 = perfect but no decent refresh rates.

http://www.displaywars.com/27-inch-16x9-vs-34-inch-21x9

27" 16:9 and 34" UW is exactly the same. 29" UW isn't high enough, 34" is about right. But I'd go for 3440x1440p.

thanks for that some how i managed to read somewhere that it was no higher than a 24" but after getting the tape measure out and reading it again it seems i was wrong. I think thats just sold it as the height should be the same as my Dell
