ultrawide vs 2 1440p? plus some questions for wide screen gamers.

so now i have made my mind up im going to venture into the UW market. I need to buy this monitor at the very latest of the end of feb what ever i choose. does anyone know if anything new will be released by then or if the existing stuff is likely to drop in price in anticipation of anything new?

That ACER (X34) and the ASUS are the same under the hood for most the part, with the ACER being much cheaper, would go that way, or peek around for the ASUS at cheaper price.

Nothing is confirmed in terms of when new panels are dropping. We do know the Alianware AW3418DW is based on a upgraded panel of sorts compared to the one in this ACER and ASUS that does 120hz vs 100hz. There are also other various panels floating around, but no dates confirmed. Price wise hard to say, if anything new does drop, could be they are at an even higher premium then these two, or they could drop in price to open up a bit of room. I think it may be a mix of both. Slight drop in price, but not massive and a higher starting price for whatever new stuff comes out.

I've got the Alienware AW3418DW since about two weeks. Coming from dual PG278Q/PG278QR setup.

The screen is extremely responsive even against the TN panels (still have the PG278QR) and as shown in TFTcentral review.
Very nice experience with extra FOV and IPS colors, for now I would agree with those that say once you go UW you cannot go back.
I havent played FPS multiplayer extensively yet though, so maybe it's not the best for that, that's why I keep the PG278QR for now, just in case.
Everything is good with a GTX1080 and Gsync, no lags whatsoever.

You feel the difference between 100Hz and 120Hz, older Asus and Acer are 60Hz with maybe 100Hz overclock (many cannot reach 100Hz). I would not buy one of these older 60/100Hz monitors unless it was a lot cheaper than the new ones. They are 2 years old now.
All these UW panels have issues, the Alienware has not great contrast and on mine right side has slightly more yellow whites (seems to change on viewing angle), but 120Hz works fine, no buzzing and I cannot see scanlines at 120Hz.

I bought it for the responsiveness not ultimate image quality so for me it's fine, but if you are very picky about image quality I think you should stay away from any of these.

Hmmm ok well maybe I can live with my existing monitor until the new ones drop. I really did not think there would be much difference between 100-120hz. Not that I think a 980ti will drive it at 120 but I’m waiting for 1180ti and I’m sure that will

OK I cant make my mind up.

Im stuck on going ultra wide or two monitors... I will be gaming (i only really play new ish games) PUBG, GTA5, Arma2, Squad etc. BUT i will be working all day on this monitor too as i work from home. opening 2 documents at a time.

I have some questions for widescreen gamers if gaming in a standard aspect ratio can you effectively split the monitor into two without playing the game in windowed mode? How do you get around this if you want "dual monitor"

How do you find support for games in widescreen? Do most games now support this? do you just get more FOV?

Ultimately is this going to become the "choice of gamers in the future" or is this going to be a forever not 100% supported product?

what is peoples preferences that have used both? i have always had two monitors and obviously working on one large with maybe a drawing and excel spreadsheet open is easy but its the gaming im thinking of.

Must haves are 1440p (minimum) 120hz+ G-sync preferable. It will be driven by a 980ti for now but when next gen comes out it will be driven by the 1180ti or what ever it will be called.

Sorry for the huge list of questions but dropping a grand on a monitor i want to make sure.

I didn't read all the other replies so forgive me if I go off at a tangent.

I always use dual monitor no matter what my primary is. For work, it's just better to have the extra real-estate of two monitors unless you are a video editor then the extra width of ultra is preferable. For games I use the second monitor for other things. I have been known to watch movies while I play a game, lol. But it's really useful to keep an eye on Steam or whatever, your emails and so on,and be able to do stuff without having to minimise the game. So I would really recommend you use two no matter what. But you can just keep your existing monitor as a second. No need to spend out. One possibility here is you could get an ultra but keep an old monitor as your second.

As for gaming the most important step is to get to 75Hz. Above that it really depends because it's diminishing returns. Size is also important for immersion, although I would say resolution is not so important. Course it may be that you want higher resolution for other things than games.
