Hi all,

I have Virgin 20mb broadband and currently connect using a wireless router with both main pc and laptop. I've now had enough of connecting my main pc this way and want to have it wired using ethernet to make most of my broadband speed. However, I have just tried taking the ethernet cable out of the wireless router and plugged it into my PC and I'm not able to connect to the internet! The local area connection icon in the task bar said connected at 100mbps but my home page would not load! I haven't got a clue as to why, any ideas?

First off, I don't know a thing about the Virgin media setup.

BUT, have you literally just unplugged the router and tried connecting the PC to the wall? The router needs to be in the loop. You need an extra ethernet cable to connect the PC to the router.

Sorry if this is not the case, but that is how it reads to me.

Hi, i'm pretty sure that it's because the virgin cable modems must be fully re-booted when any other device is connected/disconnected. Think it's to do with with the fact it's changed from using the router's mac address (first connection to the cable modem) to the pc's network card mac address.. Anyhow unplug cable modem power lead for 30 seconds then plug back in. Should be fine then ;)
Likewise if you go back to the wireless router again, cable modem will need a 30 second re-boot.

Si.

You really don't want to be plugging straight into the router because you will have to reboot EVERYTHING when you want to use the laptop.

If your router has no ethernet ports (wtf) then get one that does.

I have just tried taking the ethernet cable out of the wireless router and plugged it into my PC and I'm not able to connect to the internet!
Make sure your PC is set to get all its details automatically (DHCP).
Turn off your modem and your PC for a minute.
Boot it all up.

Thanks for the info guys. I have now managed to connect my main PC with ethernet. I have a wireless router which is connected to the cable router and i simply needed to run another ethernet cable from the wireless router to my main PC and hey presto.

However, my daughter has just turned on the wireless laptop and I got the following message on the main PC; there is an ip address conflict with another system! She is now unable to connect to the internet on the laptop! Would appreciate further advice on how to resolve this.

that means two computers on your network have the same IP address. you need to change one of them.

DHCP would be an idea to stop this. I'm not going to explain in depth as it'll be in the router manual and on wiki.
Just follow the instructions that come with the wireless router. By the way if the "router" you talk about only has one ethernet port then it's a modem not a router.
