Hi folks, I'm hoping one or more of the resident geniuses might be able to shed some light on a little problem I'm having.

I recently put together a Quad core system using a Q6600 G0 chip, all was well for a while. First couple of days I had a play with the clock speed then dropped it back down to stock while it I was happy everything was working well and stable. After about 8 days Vista rebooted. No blue screens or error messages it just hard locked and then rebooted. Since then I have been unable to even reinstall Vista, the installer stops straight after the 'Windows is loading files..." screen going to a black screen and staying there until I eventually press reset.

I have tried all sorts from different cables, HD's, DVD, Memory combinations and even removing expendable cards like the Xfi to no avail. I have even tried a different Motherboard and both the original Abit IP35 and the Gigbyte GA 965P-DS3 boards produce exactly the same results.

I have also run Memtest86 and after a 6 hour run there were 0 errors.

I have the following:

Intel Q6600 G0
Abit IP35 / Gigabyte GA 965P-DS3
Tuniq Tower (Temperatures are low)
4gb RAM (4*1gb - tried in all configurations)
Nvidia 8800GTX
SB X-FI
650W Enermax PSU

Having change the board and run the memory tests I'm kinda leaning towards the CPU but I could be and often are wrong, anyone have any other idea's?

All input greatfully received.
Regards.
Jon

Looking at what you have tried, it doesn't sound much like a hardware problem.

I had a problem once when playing about and re-installing XP where the it wouldn't install as the installer had detected that an operating system already existed on the HD and was flagged on the MBR (Master boot record).

I had to FDISK the drive before I could install XP again. There are probably better utilities for this.

Is there not also some security thing with Vista which prevents re-installs as Vista decrees a re-install as a new build and should therefore have a newly purchased OS as Vista is not transferable. That might just be rubbish, but it came from a reliable source.

Hope you get it fixed ok.:)

do you have a windows xp cd you can try to install temporarily to find out if its your copy of win vista or if there is another problem?

have you tried reinstalling with just 1 stick of RAM?

Thanks for the replies,

i have tried with one stick of RAM with no joy. The version of Vista I have isn't OEM so as long as it is on only the one machine I should be ok to transfer.

I do have a copy of XP64 but that stops at the end of the blue 'copying files and drivers' screen, which I guess is a similar point to the Vista problem.

I will try when I get in using a disk utility of some sort to completely blitz a HD and try again..

any other ideas bounced around would be greatfully received and thanks again for the replies so far...I do love this forum, you don't tend to get smart arses calling you a 'n00b' u do actaully get help.

Keep up the good work.
Jon.

I would still wipe the harddrive, fdisk it and try again I have lost count how many times I have had to wipe a drive for a fresh install to work.

Have you tried a different DVD/CD drive?

i had a problem with one of my DVD drives (my newer one strangely) so had to get my old one out of the cupboard to install vista
