Unable to open documents

Hi there, friends laptop running Vista is unable to open any office documents or images in windows photo gallery, no error message occurs but the Office 07 splash screen stays up. I can get them to open when only running two services;
Cryptographic services
Group Policy Client

Once any other service is running these items will not open.

Ran Malwarebytes and run a full scan with Avira which brought up a few minor problems but nothing that would cause this.

Any ideas? Cheers.

Can you open up word on its own? Might be worth trying a reinstall of Office before diving into anything more time consuming (certainly quicker than running Malware scans)

No it doesn't open on it's own but like I've said it's not just word...
