Unable To Run Games

Hi

I had an absolute nightmare when my last pc died and after a lot of effort was unable to get it running. So I gave in and purchased a prebuilt system from OC. I had problems running Stalker which was jumping, freezing and eventually crashing. I thought it was just Stalker playing up so went and got a copy of Bioshock but this won't even get through the intro.

Its fine until I hit the water... If I set it at 1024x768 with min settings it will go through the whole intro. If I put high settings (1024x768) its OK in the water until about the time the propeller goes past. If I change the res to 1680x1050 it screws up as soon as I hit the water no matter what the settings. The game gets different colour blocks appearing, jumps and eventually locks up completely which sometimes effects windows even after I kill the Bioshock process.

I posted in the GFX forum as I was randomly getting a nv4_display error but I don't get any sort of error now. The only thing I have noticed is that all four CPU's seem to max out for a while when I check task manager.

I have tried a fresh install, the newest drivers and taking the overclock off my CPU without any success. I got this PC because I didn't want to have to mess around and just play some games but its never that easy. I should be able to play Bioshock at 1680x1050 without to much hassle. Can anyone give any advice on a resolution or any tests I can run to narrow the problem?

Thanks,
Cheesy.

- Q6600 oc'd to 3.30GHz
- Abit IP35-Pro Intel P35
- 2GB Reaper PC2-8500 CAS5 (2x1GB)
- 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
- NVIDIA 8800 GT 512MB
- Corsair TX 650W

make sure the drivers are installed for the cpu, i know dual core needs a driver. Also check there isnt a patch for the game to use Qcore. 2nd do a memory test on mem. 3 gfx could be a duffer.

eyemessiah - Haven't checked my temps I'll keep an eye on them when I run 3dmark06. I haven't got another CPU and don't really want to play with it which is why I purchased a prebuilt system.

]MadBoy[ - There is a "amd dual core timing fix" on the disk but nothing for quad core. And from the tweak guides it is not only apparently been designed for multi core but the aren't any issues with them.

mp260767 - I ran 3dmark05 (happened to have it) and my score looked to be on par with what it should be. I am downloading 06 now and will let you know how it goes.
--------------------------------------

3Dmark failed on the HDR/SM3.0 Graphics Test 1 - Canyon Flight test (edited as I had the wrong test). 64 quads cover the screen and are single textured and additively blended.") the screen started flickering with random colours appearing and eventually locked up at 0 FPS. The chart on speedfan says that the cores maxed out at about 64C which from the looks of it isn't especially high, though I was only getting 1-3 FPS on the CPU tests. As it didn't finish I didn't get the test score but here is what I did get:

3DMark Score 7379 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 5479
SM 3.0 Score N/A
CPU Score 5260

Does this mean that there is a problem with the gfx card as it fails as soon as it starts adding SM3.0 shader effects? I know its not the most up to date but I put Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on last night and was running 1680*1050 8x AA 16x AF and max settings with no problems.

what temp is the gfx card running, that really does sound like the gfx card is borked! Thats pretty much what my old 7800GTX OC used to do. I had to BACK off the clock speeds for it to be stable. I sent it back in the end, got a new one :O)

I just ran 3dmark06 a few more times and crashed out each time on the HDR/SM3.0 Graphics Test (including one "The nv4_display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality." error). The gfx temp maxed out about 58C so I don't think that's a problem. I'm just gonna have to give OC a call on Monday.

Thanks folks.

It does sound like the gfx card has gone a bit sideways. Can you rma?

I meant a different power supply by the way. I could be that the graphics card isn't getting enough juice when things start getting heavy. Difficult to test without either a known good psu or some guts & a multimeter :)

unstable OC

might be worth copying down the bios setting for the overclock (fsb/voltages etc) then reseting the system to default and see if you still have the same problem.

checking the specs for the 2 games u mention, it might be that splinter cell doesnt need the sm3 and bioshock does.

I have already tried removing the overclock (you can save profiles in the bios) and it didn't make any difference. Its got to be the sm3 as Bioshock, stalker and 3dmark06 fail when used but BF2 and SC:CT have no problems.

edit***

I just noticed that SCCT has SM3 settings when I turned them on the game ran but loads of textures were screwed and even the text on the options menu was corrupt.
