Unable to send message, retrying..

I'm quickly beginning to regret Giffgaff.

9 times out of 10 when I'm sat at my desk with at least 50% signal, I send a text message and my HTC Desire goes bonkers, constantly beeping saying 'Unable to send message, retrying'.

It annoys me with this for about 20 seconds before giving up. I'll then manually try re-sending and eventually, the message sends.

Why is this? I have signal - sufficient enough to have just held a crystal clear voice conversation!

Thanks.

I run 3 phones on giffgaff, couple of androids and a c905, not had any issues.

Did you request the txt for the settings?
(TXT 'settings' to 2020 from your phone)

I've had a Tescomobile 30 day rolling sim for the past 3 weeks, not had any problems so far with the o2 network. But I have used 85% of my data allowance already though, I think the 500mb allowance might not be enough. I've even disabled data for a few days to save on data usage.

Delete text conv and start again will fix it. Hope o2 release update sometime soon, although be nice if the fix my phone soon (so far 27 days)

Thats why i went with Giffgaff, true unlimited Data, next best was Tmbolies £20 6month bolt on, but that had a limit that I imagined would get reduced too following suit of the others.

I buy the £10 per month goodie bag, unlimited data, unlimited texts and 100mins - but my calls to my Mrs/kids are free as the yare on Giffgaff too.
I will never go back to contracts now, been able to just swap and change to best suit your needs is awsome.
30day rolling or PAYG with bolt ons and buy my phone out right.
If u want an Invite to giffgaff btw, get a current member to do it and you instantly get extra £5 credit.

Feel free to contact me through my trust if anyone wants a Sim sending to them.

And now I'm getting text messages 20 minutes after they were sent. Just got one timed at 20:20!

Oh and suprise suprise, I've replied and my Desire is constantly beeping at me saying message sending failed, retrying..

Happens to me and my desire pretty frequently too (on O2). It happens most often when I am at the football and trying to text mates at half time. I imagine that the local cell is really busy, especially with 20-30k in the stadium, and this is what causes this. I also get this error when sending texts when you press send an the network coverage type changes (e.g. from H to E).

I've tried different SMS tools (Handcent, Chomp, standard android) and nothing seems to fix this.

Worryingly, I have now started taking my ancient k750 to the football and that works absolutely fine - so this might be a desire-android-o2 issue

I'm 99.9% sure that it is something to do with the way that the desire sends text messages that cause a problem on the O2 network. It may be because there is no 'outbox' function and if the text message can't go straight away (dodgy coverage or busy local cell) then it just comes up with the error.

Other phones work on the O2 network at times where I really struggle with the desire failing to send (at the football) and when I use my old orange pay as you go sim I don't get the error either

Wow this really is annoying. I think half the problem is that the signal fluctuates so badly. One minute I have 3 bars. Next I have no coverage. Then 1 bar. Then 3. Then 2. Then no coverage. All without moving the phone.

That will be exactly what is causing it. The same happens to me at home on O2 as I live in an area that is right on the limit of the local HSDPA service. If I send a message whilst the H icon is displayed and it can't communicate with the tower and drops back to E I get the error sending the message.

When I am at home I can cure this by sticking the phone into GPRS mode only, but if you are in an area where the signal is weak all the time then even this option isn't available to you.

Fox, can you try turning off your data connection and texting without a data connection? I have seen similar problems with other Android phones e.g T-mobile Pulse and Samsung Galaxy S. The phones will drop texts and miss calls becuase the phone is connected to the 2G or 2.5G edge network. If you have a 3G connection the phone can upload/download data and receive texts and calls simultaneously, where as on 2G it doesn't have the necessary bandwidth.

That's a good suggestion, however, it is also something i've tried when in a busy local cell (at the football) and at home and it didn't help me on O2. Let's hope that Fox has more luck with it though :)
