Unbelievable!

Personally if my car got stolen I would rather the police not try and look for it full stop.

Kids pinching mine would rag the heck out of it and I'd probably end up having to take it back once found only to discover a month or 2 down the line the engine and/or gearbox is shot.

Rather it stay gone and I claim on the insurance - which probably won't pay out because the bird poo in the bonnet is classed as a "mod"

The car owners life is not an easy one.

Usually I orient myself towards defending the Police, but this 'scheme' really does seem totally ridiculous. I can certainly understand that the police face budget issues, but they should take that to the Home Office and not make victims of crime suffer further instead.

They've got to be kidding, right? The Police want to charge a victim of a crime £105, so that they can actually do the job they're paid to do in the first place?!

Could it be less of a case of charging for storage, and more of a case of discouraging people from having the forensic tests, so the police can simply chalk a recovered vehicle up as a 'closed case' for their crime statistics?

Either way, it's a complete urine take. This will only serve to further damage the police's image in the eyes of the average motorist.

Honestly, its more the recovery agent side, not the police.

When A vehicle is stolen and found, Police have to pay a statatory £55 to get the vehicle recovered under their own powers... so its all part in parcel with the agents who pick it up, its not the police who get the cash, it goes to the recovery agent who picks the vehicle up.

Although it is totally ludicris that the owner has to pay for it!

So if I chose not to pay, and the vehicle wasn't recovered...would the insurance pay out?? ;)

Ahh - it's only for recovery - nvm.

So what, the police should buy some recovery vehicles.

Well what my company does is send out Vehicle Recover Ops to cars for example that have been stolen - we dont deal with fees etc, but its my understanding that police have to pay certain fees to the recovery firm for them to recovery vehicles and store them in special SOCO bays for later examination by the police...

What next? Charge to pick up the man who robs your house?

"Yes sir, we found the man but we cant arrest him until you give us £100!"

This is ridiculous, most apects of investigating crime cost the police force money, thats why we pay taxes. I expec in most situations the insurance companies will pick up the tab, but the money will still have to come from somewhere.

In situations where low value cars are stolen by people known to the car's owners it will cause more people to take the law into there own hands.

"Hello, is that the Police? I've been assaulted"

"OK, if you want us to take photos of the injuries, that'll be £100. Obtaining CCTV footage will be £50. Actually making an arrest will be £500, but we have a 'buy one, get one free' offer at the moment, so if you were assaulted by multiple people you'll save some money!! Would you like me to send you a pricelist?"

What a joke

The sell-off government has probably sold off the land that the police used to store vehicles, whoever has bought the land has decided they'd make more money charging the spaces back to the police for use rather than developing into houses.
