Unboxed my new 7970 AND.........

Hi Guys,
So as the title suggests,I bought my 2nd 7970 last night from OCUK and it arrived today.I bought the HIS ice-q version but my excitement was short lived.I opened the box to see the card, without an anti-static bag, wedged circuit board down into the foam. After some very careful pulling (breath held) I managed to get it free.Did all the usual (clean driver install, driver sweeper, etc) but once the windows is starting black screen goes and the blue loading screen kicks in it hangs for a couple of seconds the the screen goes all acid trip.I can remove it and stick my ref XFX card straight in and all is fine.tried both pci slots and all number of different config's but its just not having it.My guess is its a re-shelved return. Not happy about this as expected.I know mistakes are made and the nature of the game means I will get faulty gear every once in a while but I paid £350 and did not want someones returns, working or not.Come on OCUK,sort it out!

Begs the question, why, if you were concerned with the integrity of the card did you then proceed to install the card rather than phone customer support or ask about packaging on here first?

Regardless if it is new (personaly, I feel GPU's should be sealed in a anti static bag), it doesn't work. Sorry to say mate but DSR/RMA time :(

Agree, a lot of money these cards, the least we can expect is a quality control sticker and the card in a sealed anti-static bag, in foam, in a sealed box. We, the customer, should be the first to open the box\bag since being sealed at the factory. :)

Because I have only bought 3 cards brand new and I dont have much experience with them. For all I know OCUK might open boxes to check contents or include free codes.Plus I bought it and wanted to get on with it.Had the card been ok then I would have kept it.

My Gigabyte 7870's outer box was not sealed, the GPU was in an anti static bag sealed with ordinary sellotape.

I thought that was a bit suspect but the GPU had definitely never been used, it had that band new smell and was as clean as you would expect.

Thought it was a bit cheap tho when i considered it cost at the time £240 while my Asus Sabertooth 990FX motherboard costing £140 came in a really posh box outer box with the Motherboard housed in its own removable rigid sealed tray with a transparent lid on it.

Packaging was defiantly designed to impress, which is nice when your spending that kind of money...

You think that's bad?
I bought an MSI 7970 and it had a screw fall out when I got it out.
RMA'ed it, my new MSI 7970 died 2 days after (No display) :p

That's unlucky. :/

That's just MSI.
Only the other week a 7870 MSI blew up, taking an SSD with it and smelling like a dead animal.

Then a 7850 unstable at stock.

If this was user error, I'd understand, but it's not.

On a 6970 DCII right now. Think Bailey's going to have a heart attack when he goes to work, as the original 7970 isn't due in with them till Monday I think, a new RMA arranged before they've even gotten the first.

If the foam is anti static, then an anti static bag is redundant, no?

Yeah, what's up with MSI lately?

Dunno, but I am glad I didnt get my first 2 choices which were, lightning (no dual link) and ref model MSI.Although saying that Im no better off anywhoo :D

this is reasn i always go for cheapest manufacturer. They are all the same **** with different stickers on in my opinion. And not single one died on me over 15 years of building pcs.

Every GPU and Motherboard I have bought has always come sealed in a Anti Static bag. The bag has always been sealed with a security sticker and this gives me peace of mind that what I am buying is new.

Whilst I agree that the foam is anti static, it wouldn't give me that same peace of mind. If this is how it is now though, best I accept it.

Both my graphics cards and one of my motherboards are Asus, and i've had several Asus products in the past, not had a DOA of theirs yet. I also find their packaging to be amongst the best in the market to the point where the box is to nice to hide away!
